very few highlights and the Day Job set closer is missing(not a big loss really). The second set on the other hand is of very high quality. The first set starts with a nice Cold Rain and Snow which is energetic and fun. After that things slip downhill fast until the Looks Like Rain. The Superstitious/Down in the Bottom combo is lackluster and almost completely breaks down in the middle. Stagger Lee is plodding and uninteresting with croaky vocals. A false start to MamaTried continues the bad trend hut it does segue into a nice yet brief Mexicali. Bird Song is one of my favorite tunes but here it is really sloppy with poor vocals/harmonizing and the jam doesn't really go anywhere. Brent is using some odd midi affect that is very distracting. Jerry's playing is excellent but the contrast of Brent is disastrous. Looks Like Rain is the best played song in the set with passionate ranting by bobby. "I can't take no more fuckin' rain today!" Day Job is missing, they can keep it. Set 2 is stunning well played considering how poor the first set was. Man Smart, Woman Smarter is energetic and a fun way to get things going. Out of it's ashes a rollicking Goin' Down the Road erupts with blazing leads by Garcia. Odd placement for this song but it keeps the energetic vibe going. Estimated>Eyes finishes the pre drums jam both of which have excellent group improvisation and awesome Garcia solos. There are some beautiful moments in the transition from Space into a well played Truckin'. Ferocious strumming at the final crescendo. This leads into a soulful Black Peter with surprisingly good vocals for the era. Around and Around is next but it really falls flat. An rousing Sugar Mags closes a great set. The first set is brutal and the sound quality isn't that great so this gets a 3/3.5

called it simply Ain't Superstitious on tapes. It should never be split intot two tracks, that is beyond idiotic. Deadbase is great but has some mistakes for sure, as most of us old time third-generation Heads know. And our generation - basically the 15th annoiversary / 1980 group after the post 74/terrapin / shakedown group (2nd gen) and the original group from the ballrooms and winterland pre-'74 (1st gen) - we were the last good generation befopre the Touch heads invaded. Alpine '87 one of the "big boys" when it comes to est>eyes? Please. I could walk into the music room with my eyes closed and pick any pre-'80 version that would make that look silly, like most '87 shows were. Although I did enjoy Roanoke thoroughly, the night they did scarlet>fire. the foirst night had a gtood dew rescuew the show, before then it was pretty lame. And the Pittsburgh Shaledown was real good, not '85 level like Merriweather or Nassau or Philly or Red Rocks but still real good. I agree completely with the reviewer below talking about how Alpine "breathed". I saw that whole suymmmer your, most of '84, all of '86. So I have been to a lot of 'sheds", ano nothing sounds liek Alpine. One of my favorite all-time venues and I felt real lucky to experience it when it was truly "alpoine". '86 was when sthing sstarted sliding, too many people, way overcrowded, the special atmoshpere was gone. Things got worse every year, I never went after '86 (I saw '84, '85 and '86 at Alpine) but I heard some dishearenting reports, which pretty much were scene-wise, the whole scene was crumbling from the tiouch heads, too much popularity, nitrous in the lots, all that garbage. By '89 I heard ALpine was real bad, like going to see Springsteen one reviewer wrote, just another concert. Sad but true. This Brid SOng was majestic on the lawn in the beautiful June evening. Hard to belive that was 25 years ago. Stream this and the whole tour immediately. The next night was better. This whole tour was fantastic, the 20th anniversary year they had alot of fun and the summer was when things kicked into high gear night after night. Then the Dylan / Petty stadium tour in '86, the coma, and things were never the same again, expeditied by the Touch Head era. What a ride while it lasted though.

Park, I'm not sure. I've not heard it in probably close to 15 years though. I remember the night we found out that Brent had died, and I put this in just for the Black Peter as a tribute. Unfortunately this was before my being "old enough" to go to shows. I was a little skate-punk @ the time listening to the Dead Kennedy's, Black Flag, The Circle Jerks, Naked Raygun, etc. LSD & Pink Floyd came a year or so later, then a friend went to military school & came back with a tape saying "you'll like all the spacey stuff on here." I do not recall the year, venue, songs, etc, but things started to change as far as my musical library was concerned. Anyway, this is a fine recording of a fine performance---it is from 1985 dontcha know...

often did the last 10 years on nights when jerry was flagging a bit.love these 85 looks like rains--not really a great song but the shifting dynamics were very dramatic during this period and the band/healy often tossed the sound around alot. bird song and estimated are hip with sort of a pre-midi texture thing? guess that's what i'm hearing.wild place in 1985.
