Nice happy inspired show
Return to Ventura after the 86 collapse. The band seemed happy to start the summer tour there with the tour with Dylan soon to happen and In The Dark soon
...
to be released. All the Ventura shows in 87 were good and worth a listen. Viva Ventura!!!

I agree with the previous reviewer, that this show is OK, but nothing all that amazing. (I also have some question about the suspiciously AUD sounding

SBD). The playing is OK - nothing bad about it, but I am not particularly inspired here. Highlights include a pretty cool set list (I like West LA and Esau, Bird Song, and even Far From Me... and touch of grey is a cool encore, I think) -- Anyway, I liket his era a lot, and I think there are many far better shows to represent it. Though this is a fine, non-offensive effort.

A concert to hear if 'stuck' @ a Beach.
1st Set: Let's get "Jack'ed" up people. Slightly clunky, it's a decent, well-intentioned version. Without pause we're heading to "West LA." It's just standard.

"Mama" is appropriately brisk and short, but "River" is rather non-distinctive. "Candyman" resonates nicely. But every version appears very chill...fits the beachside venue... Ummm..where are these birdcalls coming from? Anyways, "Esau" is fine. Well, at least the bird noises are appropriate as we drift into a pleasing "Bird." So far this show has been a perfect ancedote to those dazed beachcombers looking to float in and out of acute consciousness...This version builds almost to a mild "OO" anthemy, but soothes back... man, I can almost hear the waves exuding from this tape. Anyways, Bobby makes "Desolation" his own with a potent vocal delivery, and just the fact he can remember to recite every word. A solid version. "Ease" is what it should be... breezy, and setting up the expectant meat of the 2nd set. Though, for a set closer, it isn;t particularly exciting. 2nd Set: "China" is decent, but things don't cook until after the structure is thrown away and some momentum can be created through the straight-away jam into "Rider." "R" is good, if not overpowering. After a two minute break, YES! a Brent tune, in the 2nd set-no less. "Far" is where it is from my heart. After that blah-ness we head into "Man Smart" territory, It's well-jammed out, but nothing thrilling. "He's Gone" is solemnly professional, but nothing out of the ordinary. We head into a normal "Drums" which is followed by a twisty spacey "Space." "The Wheel" that follows is standard; "Miracle" is welcome to add some raunch to this overly polite show. Despite some bobby yelps, this is all standard stuff. "Black Peter" establishes its resigned groove tho I sense the band is more in a mood to rock out cheerfully than stick with this mordid stuff. "Around" and "G Lovin" are both slightly above-average... band's in a comfortable state playing up-tempo, nothing too irksome or demanding, rock n roll. Our encore is destined to be a newbie considering tonight's set list, and indeed we're graced by a Lesherrific "Touch." A decent gig.. 2 3/4-3 stars But nothing really is a Must Hear

20 hrs to see Ventura the previous year only to be greeted by a sign reading "sorry Deadheads, Grateful Dead Cancelled!" ..o man what a bummer ...only very slightly mitigated by the subsequent doses at Disney World...
