Subject: Well, it's one in ten thousand that come for the show
For those that were there, it was a cold, frosty evening in Passaic, NJ, not the place you would normally hang out unless there was a really good reason
...
to be there! The three shows were some of the first lottery shows and tickets were scarce and expensive. On this night, we were looking for anything to get inside, but could not afford the going rate. I found an obstructed view ticket for $ 20.00 and we had $ 50.00 for the second ticket. My van was parked right in front of the theatre and we were already getting slightly electric and prepared to party in/out of the van for the evening, when a short man with a nicely groomed beard, leather jacket and Gatsby hat, offered me two tickets for face value, $ 12.50 each. Could they be fake? A crowd gathered and I had to say to my fellow heads, “He’s talking to me” and handed the gentleman $ 25.00. The tickets said Row C. I immediately sold my obstructed view ticket for the same $ 20.00 I paid and we ventured toward the front door, then thru the front door and into the venue and down the aisle on the floor. So far, so good! We kept on walking and quickly realized that due to the small theatre and the need for more stage area, rows A and B were consumed by the stage and row C was actually the first row. Our seats were dead center, inches from Jerry and the Boys. We were in shock. I looked around and asked those around us where they got their tickets and several stated that they got them at face value outside! We were all clearly miracled!! The show starts and during Brown Eyed Woman, a young lady sitting behind me decides that at that moment she needs to hand a bouquet of roses to Jerry. Needless to say, I am just as buzzed as she is! I look at her and then look at Jerry. He’s looking over his glasses at her, shaking his head, and then he looks at me and gives me the look to help her. I tell her to throw them on stage. She insists she has to hand them to him. I convince her that Jerry wants her to throw them on stage. Jerry nods his head and we get her to toss the roses on stage. Jerry throws her a couple of licks and disaster is narrowly averted! The rest of the show is a blur, but a very colorful blur indeed!!

It's a shame there are technical difficulties in the middle of the show because this is otherwise a pretty marvelous audience tape. At this time taping
...
was still a covert affair, and getting mics, mic booms, cables, battery powered decks and all into a venue was a harrowing exercise. Then came the challenge of getting it all assembled, getting the levels set, making tape flips at the right time and not having some over-zealous local security guy shut you down. The first Stranger is pretty well put together. A song that walked the line but managed to stay in rotation until the end.

"Hey, I gotta see a ticket...get the eff out of here!"
Nothing better than a clean, crisp AUD, good set-list, and banter from the crowd (and security). ... A good AUD for any who prefer them to the SDB.

1980 was a pretty good year, but the boys were still getting warmed up. It's not a bad show, but it does lack the depth and energy of shows that happened
...
later in the year. Good sound for an AUD.

A show with one source, and it's not complete. But it IS a great AUD, and we're lucky to have it. The tape was paused frequently and will appeal ... more to old-schoolers (rather than GOML-nniall SBDers). I was given this as a brown-bag trade BITD and even in low gen it was a great show. I didn't have enough from '80 to know just how good. Today it's a hidden gem, though it is recognized on some lists as an '80 fave. It is also known for having the first Stranger. In the middle of a one-off run on the East coast, these were make-up dates from a single cancelled show (10/29/79). At first two were scheduled (April 1 & 2), and then they were moved back and a 3rd show added to make it worth the trip and to make up for the smaller venue. As good as this AUD sounds, crossing fingers there's a SBD in the vault.
First Set. The opener warms up and then the lazy, evolving They Love Each Other lifts the theater. The best '80 versions are understated like this; not punchy but exacting. Mama Tried is missing, and the beginning is cut from the still-excellent Mexicali. The solo is just amazing. Jer keeps going until he's satisfied. This Brown Eyed Women just may surprise you. A delight (even with the tough Jersey chatter). The first-ever Feel Like a Stranger has a slight cut. Jer has it all worked out and starting here it was played almost every night through the year! Check out how these earliest versions are cousins to West LA Fadeaway. Far From Me is the 2nd one, premiered the night before. In fact, the last 4 songs of the set match the night before and this too became an '80 framing. The rest is average '80 with Lost Sailor excerpted and Saint missing.
Second Set. Though it seems odd, Dough Knees started a second set 8 times in '80. The band does the cold start and BOOM go the levels AND the PA; but the playing is explosive. This Samson is ten pounds of dynamite in a five pound bag. Astounding. And listen for the little fills Jer does behind Bobby's vox - because he just ain't done making statements. Maybe better even than 10/30/80. Check how tight they are when Jer suddenly takes another set of measures on his solo. Terrapin is apparently just a way to catch their breath. Not the tightest, and Jer completely forgets a couple verses, but the end jam works. Playin' is a candidate for best of year. It has it all: tight verses, focused jamming, unfocused jamming, terse deliveries and psychedelic wanderings. Drums has an indeterminate cut @4:43 (probably less than 15sec). Sounds like Mickey really tested the stacks and shook the theater. He stays out for Space, which is way better than you might think an early '80 Space will be. Wharf Rat is solid, with an explosive jam. Good Lovin' then drives the theater skybound.
1st Set: B-
2nd Set: B+
Overall = 4 stars HG
Highlights:
They Love Each Other - understated yet exacting
Mexicali Blues - beginning is cut but the solo amazing
Brown Eyed Women - surprising
Samson & Delilah - sticks of nitroglycerin
Playing in the Band - candidate for best of year
SOURCES. Just the one.

I had waited to download this one because the one review was less than glowing. This is a damn fine aud. The sound is very clear and clean, a little
...
lean on the low end, you can 'hear the room', near field ambient noise (talking, clapping, singing) is minimal. The band seems a little subdued but the playing is very competent which makes for a mellow and interesting show. A couple missing tunes but this is the only way to get this show, so ya gets what ya gets. Don't let either of us talk you out of the download, this is a fun show and the sound is much better than I had first thought... Sound 3.5 but I'll give it a 4 'cause I can't give it a 3.5, show is the same 3.5ish.

How psyched were the heads to get this tune thrown into the mix... Not the best recording here, but I've heard worse Auds for sure. Its worth listening
...
to just to hear Brent and Jerry attempt to get all Acapella on the FLAS corus...singing in suprano. Its funny.
And Jerry does not have the jam down yet at all...listen to what they have figured out even a couple of months later and this pales in comparison. It gets soooo good in August and September. The jam is quite short as well...but what a great tune.
