clean recording off FM radio with lots of presence (despite the technical problems in the beginning). It was God-awful hot that afternoon. Our seats were right behind the soundboard/taper's section and we were sweatin'! But the show was very fun with a lot of energy. Much of that comes through on this recording. One of my favorite 2 or 3 Deals...this one is smokin' for sure. Liked the Cassidy and Dew. I agree, though, with one of the other reviewrs...it was a complete and utter letdown not to get the anticipated Fire On The Mtn.

Row Jimmy. Jerry's playing is smokin' in this one. The break in this version is so sweet (listen to the bass and keys). Other than the acoustic version, this Cassidy is probably my favorite. Great transitions in the jam. The Deal is above average. Probably the sweetest Dew I've ever heard. The last verses and the sweet soft playing by Jerry at the end before the build up is second to none. And wow....the BDP encore is unbelievable! Why isn't this mentioned? This ranks right up there in the top 25, at least for me.

As for the show, although it was a blast at the multiple parties for the PPV, it sounds sorta average for 89/90. I guess I was put off by the Scarlet bail-out into Bucket at the time. Wanted that Fire on this night. Then Clarence comes out and sounds kinda out of place mostly.
But Truckin >Other1> Dew is no dissapointment, that's for sure. Still a 4 star show

Old Jer always seems a litte bit cautious when there is a big money recording on the line. That said there is alot to like very polished sound nice Deal
...
well jammed but somewhat sterile. I love the vocal coda at the end although I prefer Nassua 1990 to this Deal. To me this is not even on my top Ten. If you want the best Deal of 89' I would suggest 10-16 or 7-19.

Right off the bat I am biased about this show, for my parents taped it off PPV when I was 4 years old and that VHS was the beginning of my lifelong relationship

with the Dead and all of music. I owe all of my musical career to this show; it actually gets me a little pheclemped thinking about it...
That said, this really is a great show and a solid representation of Summer '89. Very hot Minglewood, listen carefully to Brent's nasty fills. As reviewed earlier, Deal jams HARD. Killer build-up, nice up-tempo energy. Second set is pretty economical and efficient. Great Scarlet>Bucket, Ship of Fools is very very well played. Great Estimated, despite the awkward transition to Eyes. Rhythm Devils is one of the best I've heard, with incredible flow and conceptual effectiveness, and great examples of Mickey's beast drums and that huge metal bar dealie, whatever the hell it's called. Space is a little long-winded, but from there on out very solid. I personally liked Clarence's competent sax work, but that's just me.
If you're looking for a very solid, textbook '89 show, this is the one. Has that compressed broadcast sound quality, which is perfectly cromulent. Download it and convert your friends. THANK YOU ARCHIVE!!!

a great version of anything is a bit misleading. The "deal" is considered by most heads as the best the band has ever played. Check it out for that alone, but the entire show works especially since the boys were notorious for not performing well on TV broadcasts or huge festivals. maybe it's me, wouldn't be the first time.

I had a 2nd generation cassette version of the pay-per-view broadcast for years. Aside from the fun jams at the opening of the first set after Weir's amplifier
...
caught fire, while the rest of the band was waiting for the crew to replace it, and Clarence Clemons playing sax in the second set, this concert doesn't have what I would consider any memorable renditions. Nothing really stands out for me. It was a pretty standard set for the Dead in the late 80s. Nice to have a clean copy though.
