1st set is pretty good, but honestly s2 is quite sloppy, gasping for air. Yes, a good deal of 84 has that 'junky' kind of delivery and is still great, but this one just isn't as good as many others in the period.

This was when we were to believe the Jerry was on the way out and looking at him it was hard to argue. But just listen to the jams on DDB and BEW, probably the the best versions i have heard as far as energy and rawness goes. I am a hard core 60's-70's fan but 84-85 was something special. Give a listen.

The old Charlotte coliseum is a special place. Many classic concerts there from the late '50s till now. When built it was the largest domed structure in the world.A lot of history there .The Dead played there in '73,'79 and '84.from '89 on it was the larger worse sounding new coliseum. The old coliseum may not have had the best sound ,but shows were always loud and at about 12,000 for concert capacity most seats were good. This is a good recording of a good show .Check out 5/3/79 Charlotte it is pretty good too..

its my kind of show as the reviews state this is a smaller more "old school" kind of place and you can hear it in how Jerry's bangin' it out in there.(Stranger) Being a fan of 84 combined with a small older venue that's it for me.
the sbd sounds better than the aud. and I like a killer aud over a sbd but,not in this case.

Can't agree about the sound though. one half of the sound system was out for the first set, and the old coloseum always had a bad echo sound. I grew up in charlotte and saw a LOT of shows there (this was my only dead show in the old venue though).
Agree, brents solo on JBG was stellar.
Another good charlotte show was second night of Charlotte 89 (I think it was Oct. 23), one of the early times Jerry whipped out the MIDI on I will take you home, and a smoking lovelight to bring it all home....
Good times

This show was real good. One of the best China Cat - Rider. Also a real good other one, one of the best I heard. Listen to Brent on Johnny B. Goode, Prime.

Charlotte '84 was my first of over 120 shows. My best friend and I drove from Atlanta to Charlotte in my '73 Bug. Needless to say, I was hooked from the first note. I am very thankful that I saw the boys during this period, as I think that they were on one hell of a roll. This was also my first 'bootleg' tape, and I listened to it over and over. Of course, it was no where near as good of a recording as this one !!
This is a GREAT second set !!!!!!!!!! I must say, the old Charlotte Coliseum sounded better than the current one. It had character, it was small, and the sound pumped in there !!
