Note- This is the same source as the previous etree seed (shnid #7222), though I believe the previous seed has been normalized. The previous seed was also missing the last 4 minutes of Deal, and had small (DAO) silent spots between all the tracks; via Eric Ray; Seeded to etree by Willy

I remember walking over the metal bridge leading onto the "island" and everyone "mooing".
The band looked tired to me as they started and had some technical ... difficulties early but came on strong later in the night. We were within 10' of the stage.
My other great memory is a friend who dosed a little much laying on his back staring at the sky during miracle. We thought we were going to lose him...Great memories from a fun time in the bands history.

Subject: Great sound quality?
Subject: Great sound quality?
I would beg to differ on the sound quality part. I agree that for many sections of the show the sound is excellent for an AUD. However, there is a noticeable
...
"warbling" of the sound from China Cat until somewhere in either GDTRFB or NFA. Now I'm not a taper, and no expert on tapes, so my terminology may be flawed, but during that section it sounds like an old tape that's been played too many times. It really bothered me.
Despite that, though, I can tell that this is a decent show. I'm struggling whether to give it a 3 or a 4 because it's a solid 3.5. Gets 3 stars because the sound drove me nuts. The short first set starts with a hot funky Stranger, then takes a nap, only to wake up for a blazing Deal. The second set is the warbling set, but I could hear an excellent China Cat and a fun Spanish jam in there somewhere.
As far as the Harrisburg crowd "Not quite getting it," as someone who lived in the Harrisburg area for 4 years, people in Harrisburg just generally don't quite get jammy music. I saw the Rhythm Devils here a while ago, and most of the crowd stayed in their seats the entire time! The energy level was waaaaaaay low. Seen several other concerts by funky and jammy bands in this area and they always feature lame audiences.

Subject: Brent, not Jerry
The distinct tones of Jerry, Bob and Phil are all doing other things separate from Nearer My God to Thee, that leaves only Brent. Also, you can hear his
...
keyboard shift into a more recognizably "Brent" sound just before the end of the track, but still on that same strain.
Sounds like a good show, excellent source.

Yes, this was my first show (of many, many ...) - hence I have downloaded and am listening to it now. We all had trouble getting recording devices on
...
the island that day, but my 1st GEN tape is still in my collection. We brought in a decent Sony Walkman and the recording is excellent - to this day!
The show was just OK, but when Bobby realized that the crowd was 'not quite understanding it', he started to use a few swear words during 'Hell in a Bucket' to get the crowd going - that to me was even obvious at the time.
Then the China Cat - nice !!! Good 'raw' Dead!
I spoke to a friend of mine who was dating Bob at the time (years later) and she told me that the band 'just hated the palce'. Odd - because they came back in '84 too.
Everything came together very well just as it was getting dark and they turned the lights on - just before 'Playin ...' After that, the show took on a different meaning --- backtracking, it really started during 'China Cat' and kept on going and the D/S was excellent.
Didn't make it to Madison for the next show as I was only 17, but I still pull out this tape now and again today to hear a very clear recording of the Dead before they really started selling out every show after Hershey, PA in '85.

I haven't downloaded the show since I have a 1st gen cassette that sounds amazing: perhaps the same setup(?), but what sets this show apart is the intense

jamming from the beginning of Playing until the beginning of Miracle. A friend of mine with whom I went to the show said "That was the most intense space I've ever been through." Great Spanish jam.

The metal walking bridge over to the island had a grated metal plank like those that "sing" when you drive over them. The grate had a pattern that was
...
enhanced by seeing the river waves pass underneath it. Picture hundreds of dosed heads walking over this bridge and watching their feet and you get a taste of what it was like for us this first time visit to City Island. : )

Subject: Sound Quality? Yes. Show Quality? No.
This was my 3rd show and my memory of it isn't nearly as favorable as the three previous reviews. I've been looking for a decent sounding copy of this
...
show for 21 years now. THANK YOU Archive.org (and those who taped/seeded this show)for FINALLY allowing me to hear this show again.
The recording quality of this show is excellent, esp. considering it was 83. However, upon further listening, I still remain unimpressed with both setlist and performance. It started out great with a strong Stranger, but FOTD, CC Rider, and Ramble on Rose slowed the show down to snooze level. I felt that way both then and now. At the time, few knew Brother Esau except for tapers and those who could get tapes. When Deal hit, there was NO WAY it was going to be a set closer after only 40 minutes and 5 songs. So it felt like the set was picking back up again. Trust me when I say I wasn't the only one a little confused and disappointed by a 6-song, 50 minute 1st set. This was 83, not 93. The Deal is good, but I still say it's one of the weakest 1st sets I saw in my 129 shows.
Bucket starts the 2nd set but it's still 83 and like Esau, you had to have tapes (or be on tour) to know the tune. IMHO, this Bucket is average to below average. China > Rider is real good and the Playin has it's moments too. Miracle was good and I can't really comment on Stella Blue as it's just *not* my kinda song (I realize that's heresy to some). GDTRFB was a pleasant surprise and was probably the highlight of the entire show for me. Not Fade Away was good. To me, Brokedown Palace is 2nd only to Black Muddy River as worst encore song possible. I do not understand going out on a low note. This whole show seemed slow and boring to me then, and upon multiple listens since, I'm not convinced otherwise. I very much enjoyed hearing it again, but I wouldn't recommend this show to anyone who wasn't there. There are way too many shows from 82-84 that destroy this one.

Good example of state of the art recording for the period. Too bad the taper didn't have access to a PCM. Nice punchy vocals with very minimal crowd noise.

Good job Tommy, and a nice job of preserving the masters.

This is a sick aud!! You know the band is on when Phil is shaking your rear-view mirror. Short tight first set, and pre-drums is also very hot. This
...
show is forgotten in Deadheads compendium II so its pretty anonomous, dont overlook it...."its gonna be a crazy night."
