This show is kind of special, but I want to agree 1000% with the emphasis on 84 being worth the study, my first was in 82, but I hear the huge changes
...
between say september 82, 83, and 84, all are distinct sounds, I think. However, I am a moron, or so I am told, a moron that thinks say more 84 sbd's are wanted out here in the archive, like 4/21 Philly and especially the playin china doll high time, which I am surprised gets ignored. I wet there and no sbd available yet, alwaysyet.............. Playin china doll high time was there.

from a background vocal perspective is a huge plus. Plus we have the gift that Charlie always gives. His talents. We are a spoiled lot. I do wish they played longer songs like they did prior (in the 70s). I'm not sure why they stopped. I know opiates suck out your creative juices and perhaps that was the problem for Jerry. But regardless, I'll take this and be quite happy thank you very much.

Top Ten for 1984 !
Springtime buds in January!! Well I've had a challenging time trying to pick the last of my top ten for 1984. A few shows were juggled around and sampled,
...
like 7/4/84, 4/20/84 and 5/8/84 from this here run. But this show just jumps ahead of the pack right away with the fine, hot Bucket to get things off to a roaring start. Another factor on this show is the unique song list. Especially Set One with oldies like Dupree's and Dire Wolf making rare appearances. And then a Touch of Grey ending, a song still finding its way in the show order at this point. Although I would prefer a slightly more jammy first set, all the songs are played with focus and fire, so who's complaining? And then opening Set Two with Uncle John's Band? Got my attention. Also the Truckin>Smokestack>Black Peter is a nice change from the ordinary 1984 offering. Rooster is even played with style and restraint, not the normal Bob screech fest. Jerry's and Brent's solos more than compensate for Bob's inability to play in tune. Dupree's is fun and full of balloons and soap bubbles, nice keyboard by Brent. Cassidy is well jammed and really sets the mood for the great LA Fadeaway that follows. Phil and the drummers lay down some serious funk, while Jerry blazes away high above. Touch is fast and furious, and ends the set with a smile. So far, a medium to 4 star show. But Set Two really raises the bar and delivers the magic. Set Two is another good example of that "laid back gooey warm melty feeling" that many hear and feel in these shows. Uncle Joint, I mean John's Band immediately lets you know to take your seat on the bus, it's gonna be a long mellow ride. The songs Jerry picks to shine on tonight are all slow ballads - Ship of Fools, China Doll and a rare Black Peter. UJ Band features some jaw dropping jamming by Phil and Jerry near the end, and good vocal harmonies to boot. Without dropping a beat, the boys morph into Sampson and Brent plays like he's backing an all black gospel choir. The boy got the spirit tonight!! Not my favorite song, yet it's just perfect here, giving the set the right amount of spark to balance out the slower Jerry songs. Garcia's solos in Sampson will peel the paint off your walls, look out! Time to cool off with a poignant Ship of Fools. Jerry gives us a stellar vocal on this one, and this version is as good as any from a decade earlier, 1974 which is saying a lot. "Time there was and plenty". Indeed. Okay, you should be melted around the edges by now, ready for the centerpiece of this set, the Playin>China Doll combo. Finally a Playin long enough to do some serious jamming - over 10 minutes which is good for 80's standards. Brent does some fine jazz keys while Jerry puts the pedal to the wah, first with mellow blues and greens, then gets fast and furious with flaming runs. Near the end Jerry winds things down from a fast fusion jam between the drums and Brent to the China Doll vibe with diamond like chimes. China again features good vocals from Persian Jerry. The contrast between the edgy Garcia guitar and Brent's harpsichord makes the song - the alpha and omega, the ecstasy and agony of love. A short aborted Playin reprise ends the song, then Drums. A short Drums, and long Space. I like that! And like many 80's shows from this period, the Space is as good or better than the rest of the show! Seat belts and space helmets on cadets! A jungle scenario begins the segment with marimba sounds and weird bird effects. Then all hell breaks loose and it feels like you're going down the cosmic drain, swirling in a spiral of lights and sounds. After 5:30 or so, you've come through the black hole into twinkling stars being born and dying as the Truckin theme echoes down the galaxies before settling into a mellow orbit, floating in the vastness of the cosmos. Then rounding the dark side of the moon, you again hear a band in the Lunar Crater Bar kicking into Truckin and you land your body down there cause you've got to dance! The Doo Dah man hands you a number and you're rockin. Bobby forgets some words, so you know you're back to Earth, then they build to an explosive ending with Jerry showering fireworks over the crowd. They continue the mood seamlessly into a Spoonful that is sadly, too short. Fine B3 work from Brent here. Peter starts slow and bendy and mournful to perfection, then grows to a soul shaking climax. A rocked out Around seems to end too soon and the boys need a minute to find the Playin reprise beat, but finally drop into a scorching ending to a great show. Skip the Day Job, per usual. But otherwise a very solid 4 star show that will spice up any stale 80's collection you might have. Very recommended. And of course this new Miller remaster sounds great as ever, from the whale songs of Phil to the Bill's high cymbals you'll hear it all. Crank it up folks and groove! cheers, Dr. Flashback :-)
