sounded like on a good night -- something that can be obscured by the relative sterile sound of SBD recordings. This one definitely sounds like an outdoor affair, with a resultant sound that's a bit hollow at times. On paper, it's an average setlist. Solid, but nothing to write home about. The band is clearly trying to achieve liftoff at times, but never quite gets there, despite an enthusiastic crowd. All in all, a solid addition to any collection, but only after the better-known stables of this year have been explored.

I was there! It was the last show I taped myself.
I was completely spoiled by outdoor venues like the Greek and the Frost, and Park West was not in the ... same league, but it was outside and the sound was good. I do recall the gate crashing, which was unfortunate, and the hours it took to leave Park West after the show was over.

My best friend and I had seen the Dead a couple of times before, but indoors, so we were pretty stoked for an outdoor show. The night started weird and

got weirder. We had gotten, er, shall we say, a sensory enhancing substance from a friend who did not tell us that the black plastic pyramid was just a vehicle for the stuff, not PART of it (we were so clueless). We wanted to make sure we each got an equal dose, so we stopped at the McDonalds near the entrance to Park West for a bite and then went back to the Century Luxus and dropped the said pyramids in a cup of orange soda. After about 5 minutes they had not dissolved, so we thought okay, maybe the soda is too cold. We cranked the heater in the Buick up to high and put it on "vent" and held the cup in the stream of hot air for what seemed like forever. No meltage...so we said screw it, shared the soda and drove to the parking lot feeling a bit miffed. It was already kind of a mess because it had rained that evening. I remember some brutish looking cops on horses chasing down Deadheads who were trying to sprint past and scale the fences to get in for free with a pretty good rate of success! Other 'heads were selling cans of beer for a buck, so we downed a few and then went in. The first part of the show was somewhat subdued, probably because it was still light out. We stood off to the side and a bit above the bootleg recording area until the Dead broke out "When Push Comes to Shove", then started to feel restless because the orange soda was kicking in. As we looked below us, we could see lines of people moving through the massive crowd like little streams, so we sidled our way down until we jumped into one and just got swept along by folks dancing their way along until we popped out on the edge of the crowd. That was great! So we jumped in one further down and went all the way across to the other side. We eventually jostled and squeezed and elbowed our way down down down into the maw of the crowd about 20 feet from the stage. The ski slope and gravity ensured we were packed in like sardines down there, it was hot, sweaty and surreal. There were hardcore deadheads down there and they glowered at us wondering who these strangers were who had infiltrated their domain. (Afterwards, my buddy and I both agreed that we had never felt such a sinister atmosphere at a concert - there was a dark presence down there - or was it just the effects of the orange soda?) We stood there penned in as Jerry and Bob (and maybe Phil Lesh - who knows) jammed to some sort of chest they had brought on stage and opened up. Light and energy seemed to emanate up from it only to be absorbed by the now starry sky. I remember having the feeling that they were playing to someone or something out there somewhere - perhaps trying to summon an alien mother ship to come take us all up with a tractor beam and head out into the galaxy. After four or five tunes we started to feel more and more freaked and claustrophobic, so we turned and started working our way back up through the crowd like a couple of salmon on a spawning run. We just kept climbing and climbing until we emerged at the very top of the crowd, took some huge soothing breaths of the cool night air, and plunked down on the grass. Eventually we spotted a couple of friends who we had lost earlier and started to make our way toward them. But every time I would get within hailing distance, they would all laugh gleefully and scatter like a bunch of elves or faeries and then reassemble on the other side of the hill where I had just been. This happened several times until eventually they slowed down and I caught up to them. They then denied all of my claims that they had been messing with me. Whoa. We watched the rest of the show from up there. I vaguely recall the crowd erupting when they heard the first strains of Gimme Some Lovin' and then All along the Watchtower.
By the last song we were completely spent. We slowly moved through the chaos toward the parking lot as deadheads hawked tee shirts, beers, paraphernalia, posters, whatever they could to get some pocket money. We stopped and helped push a car that was stuck in a mud hole. We sat on the trunk of the Buick and had a J and more beers. It seemed like an eternity before we finally got out onto the highway and headed back down the canyon to Salt Lake. As we negotiated the curvy descent, an amazing electrical storm appeared over the valley right at our altitude. Huge jags of lightning rent the sky over and over. It was pretty crazy, being able to look directly into it instead of up at it. By the time we hit the city and headed for Bill & Nada's for some sustenance, it was pouring again (Google "Whatever happened to ... Bill and Nada's Cafe" for a great article in the strib). It was the perfect way to end a very strange adventure, having chili burgers and hanging with a bunch of misfits and miscreants who couldn't care less if we had consumed a very potent dose of orange soda earlier that night.

This is an FOB PCM recording, almost certainly using Schoeps mics...it's an excellent recording! Small chance it was AKG mics, as I don't have it written

down, but my friends who owned the equipment, whom I was assisting, normally used Schoeps (cmc3, I think). Anyway, this was a fun show, and it's a really good recording (IMO). I can tell this is our recording by the crowd noises, which are exactly the same as I have on my PCM copy. Anyway, I highly recommend it!

this show, listening to it brings back indescribably pleasurable memories. Sitting on that mountain-side on a beautiful late-summer afternoon, watching the horse-backed fuzz running down Heads who'd hiked up and around the (fenceless?) backside of the mountain, foregoing the 10- or 15-minute roundtrip to the men's room for the 3-minute roundtrip to piss on the side barriers, enjoying the quite vibrant Shakedown Street(s)—yep, you really had to be there.
One thing, there were 100~200 gate crashers who knocked down the east-side fencing, does anyone recall that? It was either before the show started or during the first set, definitely before the sun went down.

Brett. Does anybody remmeber the Turtle man? This head was at every show in which he blew through a tube into a turtle shell and made music, far out hugh! Anyway the aud of this show is decent, I love the big boss man, and the watchtower.

Having attended this concert I can honestly say the energy was there, the vibe was there, and people loved it. Imagine an entire mountain side covered

with people.. from the base by the stage all the way up to where you couldn't see anymore.
This is a great recording. I got it the week after the show on audio cassette, but over the years it degraded and was eventually lost. Good quality recording and from what I understand had some songs in it that they normally didn't play (Might Quin?).
Now I'm no expert of other sets but this recording brings back the show as it sounded to us. Being one of the larger traders of Iron Maiden concerts in the Western US I'm used to rateing quality and I'd give it a strong 4 stars. The sound is a little 'hollow' but it was in a mountain setting so basicaly all there was buffering the sound was the grass hill we were on and the trees.

1st Set: Lots of random noodlings/tunings, inclduing a 'biking' bass, (pulling a plug in front of speakers)thingy...oy, this is a long stretch of nothing

til a goofily assembled "Adams Family." Ugggh, these "Big Boss" are well-received and well-intended... but musically, they're DOA. "The Promised Land" is much more worthy of that opener slot. "Dire" is bright, but not a revelation. "Minglewood's" a tad undynamic and lacking urgency. "Row" is average. Thankfully, the proceedings perk up with "All Over Now." It's pretty good, I guess... "Loser" is what I feel like as I struggle to want to listen...Things do pick up for the climax around the mid 5's. "Cassidy" revels in Brent twinkling...circling Jerry's escalating solos.
2nd Set: Of course, "Push" is exactly that...just add 'over.' The following "China/Rider" while enjoyable, is Not an all-timer. "Man Smart" keeps the light festivities rolling, but the comphrensive energy remains at a low ebb. Though I'm digging the men conceding victory to their smaller countrparts, 'That's Right.' This "Ship" is honestly done. There's little initial vrrrooommm to "Truckin," and Bobby's bumbling and stumblin his way... It's all decent, but I wish the song, and especially the seguee of "Smokestack" could have been more stridently developed. "Drums" reaches a place of sinsiterdom, but it cools during "Space" so we could be assured by the wisdoms of "The Wheel." The elements are in order for a blockbuster "Gimme" but it never really catches fire. "Watchtower"'s got some excellent Jerry rifs late in the 3's, but besides that is consistent in the 'average' territory. Same that for "Stella" that's interesting solely for Jerry's notes in the 8's and a small side dish of Brent. "Sugar" is fine, but I'm dulled.

Nothing really Super Wow ! Just a real good show that picks up momentum as it moves on. Good sound. (work past the beginning It claers up)Nice song list.

I'm sure everyone went away real happy after this one. A real nice listen. Made my day a whole lot better.

This is a great mellow show and a super crisp audience recording. There is some intrusive crowd noise, but it is compensated for by the clean wide spectrum

sound, maybe something to do with the high mountain air? Phil is on throughout this show from the tuning at the beginning to the Zeppelin riff leading into China Cat. The Big Boss Man opener was a surprise, and Jerry lets it rip during Watchtower. The Loser and Stella blue prove Jerry is the man! This amazing setlist was the reward for those willing to venture into Utah. This show is overshadowed by the Calaveras jam with Santana which followed, but overall this is the better show IMHO.
This was a small venue only played twice with great lot camping in a Quaking Aspen grove. The stage was at the base area with people sitting on the ski slope above. I remember a very laid back vibe and our friend Carl riffing on dead song names replacing the words with Tofu, Box of Tofu, Tofu Rider, Playin in the Tofu, etc. Check it out.
