This was the Dead's first trip to Birmingham and my first Dead concert. Opening with "Promised Land" seemed sweet enough, but then they got to "and the
...
'hound broked down and left us all stranded in downtown Birmingham," and the place went nuts. You can hear the surge in the cut, but it was really dramatic live. A great little rock 'n roll moment.
By the way, in honor of the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington, NPR posted a list of songs of the Civil Righrts Movement. "Promised Land" was on it. I'd never thought of this song in that context, but I've always loved the cross-country journey and its take on the American Dream. Seeing this song on that NPR list reminded me of this concert and it occurred to me to poke around on the internet for it. Lo and behold, here it was. "I need a miracle every day."

What I remember about this concert was that some Heads asked what songs had they played so far (about 1/2 way through the concert). We told them. They

didn't realize they had played that long because they didn't want to listen to the group Ambrosia, which was playing across the street at the Civic Center. Two years later, the staff at Boutwell said they sold out of beer (120 kegs) before the first set was over. It was the first time beer had ever sold out at Boutwell. Both concerts were good.

This one is 11:22. During the sung verses, it feels like it's just Garcia and Keith at a tiny nightclub.
His voice couldn't be more earnest.
The out-solo ... starts at 9:20, and you can hear the emotionally compelling possibilities....which he later came to master now and then e.g. 10/28/79 and in ensuing years.
Terrapin is also nice (12:41); at 4:55 Garcia roams and wanders for a nice minute until he makes the turn towards the end being never told. At 12 minutes it gets quiet, but his following classical-style duet with Lesh is not as long and contrapuntal as in 11-23....
