a weird hartford run
Was working as an attorney a couple blocks from Bushnell Park and spent my lunches in the park with all the folks camping out. Caught all the shows.
...
Jerry obviously a tad under the weather. But, his playing made up for the throat/vocal issues. This was probably my favorite of the nights if only for the Bama>Johnny B Goode opening and the bizarre Good Lovin>Dear Mr. Fantasy>Hey Jude ending..... As for the "Touch Heads".... I managed to ignore them.... just as I managed to ignore the folks that couldn't handle their drugs or booze.... I was there for the music and my friends.... ain't nobodies business but their own. That said, I do miss the days when shows were at the Capitol Theater in Passaic, the Fox in Atlanta, or the Des Moines Civic Center. Much like Rat Dog the other night at the Royal Oak Music Theater, nothing like a tightly pack small arena listening to music I love, played by musicians I respect, while surrounded by tripping bumbling idiots!!!!

Jerry's got a cold, but still good show
Overall: Jerry's got a cold, which really dampens things, but the music is on and I still think of this show as a signal of the upward direction of the
...
band at this time period. The sound quality on this recording is excellent as well. The scene: my tenth show. This was the first show I traveled to with Peter C. (who would from then on be a regular touring companion). We took the Oldsmobile on it's last Dead voyage to the second and third Hartford shows and the first two Worcester shows. Just about a month later, I got the trusty VW camper that would usher us around in great style and comfort for years to come. But for these shows, we were stuck sleeping in a car. But, alas, we were young and out on the road seeing great shows, so we didn't care too much. The scene at Hartford when we got in was amazing. The whole capital lawn was filled with tents! Soon after arriving, we found the GD Hour on the radio, lit up, and listened to a sweet Visions of Johanna. The shows themselves were really strong, except for Jerry's cold (in fact, a bug was going around the whole scene and the tour cough was in full effect for many people). But the music was very strong. I was in the hallway dancing like a freak and lovin it. The music: Set I: Alabama is good, but you can hear Jerry has a cold (it would last for much of the tour and it got much worse in Worcester). Johnny B. Goode rips hard. Bobby spits out lyrics with enough power to make you forget the concert only just started. And while Jerry's voice is hurting, clearly his hands are feeling good. Brent comes on strong for Never Trust, with a really nice organ solo that gets the crowd going. TLEO is more proof that Jerry's got a wicked cold, but the playing is okay. This was the Cassidy that made me love Cassidy. It still stands as a very strong version, but at the time it was the best version I'd ever heard, and I can still remember dancing to it and thinking the jam was going to make my head burst it was so sweet. Set II: Touch opens the second set, with Bobby sarcastically noting "and now from our album, Touch of Grey, our hit single." At this time, I was a senior in high school working at a restaurant in the village of Pittsford that had a constant top 40 rotation on for background music. Touch had made it onto that rotation, so I was bombarded with the album version of this song about five times per shift at work. I had little right to be self-righteous regarding the band's new success (I'd seen my first show in 85, but can't claim exemption from the "touchhead" generation since all my touring was done 87-90), and was even happy for the boys to finally have some commercial success. Of course, as time passed and things got stupider and stupider on tour, I grew to resent the success. One year after this show I saw hundreds of people crash the gates and storm through a broken door and window into the arena in Pittsburg - that was the real signal for me that too many of the "touchheads" weren't getting it. Anyway, back to this show ... LLR is a decent, but not special version. Good energy and excellent playing by all. Bobby's vocal section is decent, but his screams at one point are just off-key enough to give me that little "Donna cringe" (I think Silver stadium 88 is much better if you're looking for a good LLR of this era). Stella soars nicely, and then Brent takes some lead vocals on Good Lovin (was this the first time he did that?). Good Lovin always ends the set, right? WRONG. They go into a really great Fantasy, and then the first Hey Jude Finale that I saw, which was a serious crowd pleaser. I'm giving it four stars, but acknowledge that may be slightly generous given Jerry's vocal problems.

Really, it's not like tonight was that much of an improvement over last
I really am enjoying these AUD's as the crowd's enthusiasm helps mask some of the (vocal) deficiencies of the band. 1st Set: Off to "Alabama" we are.
...
It's rather mellow though decently performed. How about a "Johnny" for a twist to the medley? Bobby's sure sounds pumped up to perform this one...haven't heard in a long while. Brent's got an early show-stopper with the superfulous "Never Trust." Clasp the hand of your dearest and duet on a "TLEO." "Queen Jane" is lovely but not full-bodied. "Push" is bright and airy though Jerry's lack of vocal strength weakens its conviction. Jerry's beckoning, pleading jam during "Cassidy's" mid-section calls for incantative dancing. Jump up and down during the chorus reprise. Ummm..didn't we hear "Ease" last night? Yea, that's some powerful shit they're smoking. Jerry's throat is either really sore or has tons of phglem. 2nd Set: " Bobby: And now from our album, "Touch of Grey" our hit single." Frankly, this "LLR" is patiently told, but does Not have the power or the lilting sadness of other more vital ones. Besides, there are moments of feedback and awkward sound effect transitions that distract. Without much pause they jump into a skiffle of a "Truckin." "He's Gone", where I do not know, however we're quietly mourning his forgettable presence. "Drums" is well-pronounced. "Space" features "TOO" teases which matriculate into the song. It and the "Stella" that follows don't rip from an unique cloth. (though the late 7's strike my fancy) "Good Lovin" is tepid as it weakly serves as an appetizer to "Fantasy." Jerry's searing guitar rises this version above average and the "Hey Jude Reprise" offers simple pleasures. Despite Jerry's 'old man' vocals, "US Blues" is slightly perky. 2 3/5th stars rolled down because it just isn't worth it.

LLR steals the show. Jer's voice still recovering but well played. My friend said before the show, " i feel a new Beatles tune tonight". He nailed it.

Without a doubt, the best Looks Like Rain ever!!! I can't say enough about it. Unfortunately Jerry was sick during this run, so his voice sounded like

crap. So what did Jerry do to make up for this? He played his heart out. Sound quality is good. Not crispy like the 76, 77 and 78's, but way above average for this period of time. The ONLY reason I'm giving it a 3 is because of Jerry's voice problems.
