The first of six
This was the first of a six night run between Cal Ex and Shoreline shortly after Jerry got out of rehab (again). Drove in from Baton Rouge, LA with a good

podna of mine, had a visit with uncle sid, and that's all she wrote. The show started a little strange and got stranger as it progressed. We were up in the stands in the back. I remember the sound being really funky and trying to keep my balance on them bleachers.

Thankful
1st i'll start with saying this show is a 5 in my eyes...for many reasons. One being: before the show a friend of mine introduced me to a beautiful dead

head girl. Little did i know that that girl would become my wife and we have been together ever since. Almost 17 yrs. We have a 2.5 yr. old daughter Lucy Sky. We have many years of Dead days and many tour storys. We actually saw each other on previous tours but heres were we met. Does anyone remember Squaw Valley Garcia/ Grisman. That show followed soon after this one. Ganja-la rides to the show! Thank you Archives, thank you dead heads, thank you jerry.

Other copy is cleaner
The other copy of this recording sounds a bit cleaner. First set is relatively strong, peaking with an above-average Bird Song. Second set is unfortunately

lame, and if you need a proof, Jerry skips his solo in the middle of Stella Blue.

My first road show...
So far, my first 3 dead shows were all local affairs to the LA area... this run held significance to me: It was the first time I travelled to see the

band, the first time I got to see a whole run unfold, and the first time I had seen the band perform with lighting and visuals (my other shows were all 2PM shows). I flew into Sacramento, got settled at my brothers house, and he dropped me off at Cal Expo. I was so new to it all that I was expecting a huge stadium or something, when i saw the intamacy of the venue, amazed doesnt even come close to the feeling i had. I did line duty that day, and was paid off by being 10 feet from Jerry the whole show. Right before show time, some white perf started getting passed around. I took some... yowzah! The show started off real nice, but by the time Birdsong hit I was high as a kite and holding on for dear life. Intermission was strange, sitting there starring at all these new friends I had made... all of us giggling that funny giggle. The second set sent me to some places that I cant even begin to describe. I had never seen such vivid hallucinations. I know for a fact Jerry saw me that night... the only soul in front of him NOT dancing but just starring like I was in pure disbelief. He giggled a few times, including on mike during Terrapin, and I can guarentee you he was laughing at my stoned ass... ...I also saw Jerry turn into big strange Black Widow spider... but I guess that might not have actually happened... perhaps. The combination of the lighting, the bizzare projections onto the big sail-like stage set up, theplaying and my state of mind make this a show I will never forget. I have seen better shows... but cant remember ever thinking I was going to have my eyes bug out of my head quite like this night in Sacramento. The other two shows did not come close to measuring up in my eyes...

This show has that wonderful cassette hiss that we all love. By Minglewood, the mix is pretty equalized between the band. Phil's Bass comes through very

strong. Strong show in terms of musicianship. Overall, a good soundboard too, not amazing, but strong and beefy.

me going- then it went into Miracle- another crowd jumper. In all, this show just has one awesome song after another. Iko Iko is done in a very unique way- not sure what I think about it. Picasso Moon is after the Weight- which is not listed- it is not one of my favorites, but Jerry comes back with Sugaree. The quality of the show seems good to me, but I am no sound engineer, just a lover of the grateful dead music. Cheers!
