Short Show...But Good Show

short. I think this is the shortest show they did on this tour. We were all miserable though, because there was a bad cough going around, "tour cough", and apparently we weren't the only ones that had it. Apparently, Mr. Garcia, was also feeling under the weather that night, which would explain why the show was short. The jack Straw was a nice opener, and you can hear the crowd go wild, when the lyrics were messed up on the last verse. Then it slowed down to a nice slow jam of west la, into Little Red Rooster. The surprise for me that night was hearing a nice Stagger Lee. As short as the show was, the second set rocked. The Playin in the band, Crazy Fingers, into uncle Johns was awesome. I am not a huge fan of the Drums/Space part of a show, but that night it was incredible. It was almost the Mickey, and Bill, were going crazy to make up for Jerry not feeling well. Drums/Space into TOO...Awesome. Then another surprise for me, when they jammed out on Black Peter. The Lovelight, in my opinion was just "alright" at best. To be honest, I have never been that excited by Weir singing it. The encore was Black Muddy River...And It seems like this night will last forever...Jerry's voice is cracking a little bit, but you can still "feel" the "vibe" of the show just from listening to it. So to sum it up. It wasn't the best show I have seen or heard by a long shot, but it definitely is worth a listen, or download if you know how to do it. I wish you had the opportunity to give half stars because I would have given this show 3 1/2 stars. Not quite a four, but it is more than a three.

it doesn't have the radio static that the previous night has. Decently played, but very short show. I had this show on tape back in the day. I think the entire first set fit on one side of a tape when you took out all the time gaps between songs. The second set wasn't much longer. Just like the night before, Bobby's guitar is pretty loud in the mix, which some might not like, but I do. The scene: This was the last show of Peter and my four show mini-spring tour. The weather was still crappy, but I don't think it was raining anymore, if my memory is correct. On this day, Peter ate the biggest puddle I'd ever seen. It was ridiculously ambitious. He wound up getting in way over his head, but was okay by the end of the night. My memory of this show was mostly just hanging in the hallway and being surprised at how short the songs and show were. Good quality of play, but obviously Jerry's cold was keeping him from being out there for too long. Hey, I'd rather have short sets than have him going back into a coma, right? His choice of Black Peter two nights in a row was his way of communicating that he really felt like crap, I do believe (or feeling so crappy that he forgot he played it the night before?). The music: Set I: Jack Straw is really strong, with Jerry shredding up and down the fretboard. Everything else is well played, but nothing stands out as particularly mentionable. Set II: check out the "Blackbird" tuning before Playin'. It was the very next tour that they broke out Blackbird, so I'd guess this was where/when that idea came about. Just like in Stranger the night before, I think the Playin jam highlights everyone really listening to each other - which, of course, is key to great jams. I think a lot of jams from the 86-87 era don't have that feeling. The jam here is short, but very tasty. Crazy Fingers is nice, as always (strange, I actually didn't particularly love this song back in my touring days, but I've grown to appreciate it more over the years). The jam into UJB is quality over quantity again. Fortunately, we do get a pretty nice extended jam post-UJB. Interesting Drums>Space, with a nice spacey Other One. Good lovelight, but not particularly special. BMR is an appropriate end to this evening.

is a pretty good show. it's not great by any means but it is average with some above average moments.

playin>crazy is nice, and space>TOO is nice too, although TOO is a bit clunky This is a great Crazy Fingers, but there's not too much else to hoot

and holler about. Jerry's voice isn't sounding too good tonight. It's also short, but perhaps that's for the best...any longer could have been painful. Solid 2.5 stars, but I almost always round up.

spot. Compared to nights 1 and 3 this is the clinker. not bad by any means but nothing close to the above mentioned gigs. 2 1/2 Godchaux's for this one.

A shorter and alas less comphrehensive evening than last.
1st Set: Lyrically and melodically "Jack" works out tremendously. Too bad Bobby and the biys had to goof on that final vocals. Some dude is Very enthusiastic

about "West"'s appearance. And he has a right to be as this version brims with static electricity. "Rooster" is notable for its worthy Bobby slide show. Oh, and how I was beckoning for the strong "Stagger" that follows. Staunch Euro-like cheers followed... "Queen Jane's" a little heavy on the sauce, but it's nice nonetheless. I'm feeling the funk, the wrong kind, during "Loser." A distractingly inqusitive "Let it Grow" closes off another dynamic set in Worcester. 2nd Set: The crowd roars as the chords tell them it's "Playin" time. The six minutes they allot for the song are lovely, but for some reason "CRazy" keeps busting through the doors. Like the former number, the song has not emerged from some abbreviated fetal state which prevents it from fully blossoming. However, mid-way through "UJB" the band takes off. "Drums" invites though the steady stream of "TOO" teases during what should be a opaque, undefinable experience tars "Space." Plenty of ridiculous synth action exacerbates the dementia found traversing through "TOO." Hmmm...didn't we do "BP" last night? Jerry's practically choking on his words at 4:00... it's a convincing performance. Full on vocal accompaniment during the increasingly hot highlight filled Bobby screechfest too short "Lovelite." A heavily vocalized, musically thwarted "Black" closes off proceedings. The sound is very clean. 'When it seems like this night could last forever...' 3 stars

Mix is great -- Jerry is on and voice is wonderful especially 1st set. Can't go wrong with these 3 Worcester shows!!
