To answer the question of who would post this horrible sounding aud and why:
1) This is a historical record of the first show of '82. That alone should ... be reason enough.
2) There is clearly no soundboard of this show circulating, so this is all we have.
3) The sound is actually not bad for an aud, try the NOLA 1980 October shows if you want a real 'pocket recording' sound.
4) Some if us enjoy decent auds as they give us a chance to feel the atmosphere differently than a soundboard.
BTW: THE DRAGON BEATS THE SONY

Subject: Wrong about Dolby B
Subject: Wrong about Dolby B

Where to start? You're probably so accustomed to listening to Dolby B encoded tapes without decoding the Dolby that a correctly decoded tape ... sounds "choked off" to you. The idea that the only deck that can properly play back a Dolby B recording is the one or the model that made it is a myth. Nakamichi Dragons are among the top 5 or so playback decks ever made. 3 heads rather than 2 makes a big difference as well as automatic azimuth adjustment and better Dolby circuitry. Most Sony D-5ms were put through a lot as field recorders and hardly could be expected to stay in perfect spec or even close. Playing a Dolby B tape with the Dolby off is no solution either. Lots of boosted noise and hiss. Once a master is recorded encoded that's it, you gotta decode it to do any sort of genuine transfer.
If to your ears the undecoded hissy source is "better", fine but I'm guessing either you don't know what to listen for or you have a poorly set up audio system or room or both. Most people who not understand how Dolby works hear the boosted highs it creates to cancel hiss later on playback and think, more highs, it must be better. That's wrong. Let your hearing adjust to the smoother cleaner decoded version and the undecoded one will sound distorted. Because it is.

Took a solid listening to sections of Terrapin and Althea of both of these audience recordings and am choosing the other one to download. If you do not
...
mind the slight choked off feeling and sound of the dolby on a recording then this one is your puppy. I sooooo wish the playback deck was indeed the Sony TC D-5m with the same exact dolby b rather than the Nakamichi Dragon playback source-THAT I believe would have made the difference for me between this NAK300 fine recording and the other NAK700 fine recording.
