No 5 star's post Brent?!
Thats just crazy man. IMO a keyboard player doesn't make that much difference. After all, it's still Jerry, Bobby, Phil and the drummers. I rank 9-10-91 over any Brent show personally. 9-20-90? 4-1-91? 93 also has some absolutely smokin shows (3-10, 3-17, 3-24, 5-26, 5-27, 6-15, 6-23, 9-22 ect...) Hell 94 even has some gems. It's also funny how Brent-heads rip on Vince for cheesy synth sounds when Brent was the king of the cheeseball 80s twinkle toes synth. IMO all the keyboard players brought something unique and special to the table on their best nights, and on their worst, they are painful to listen to and detract from the music. That goes for Keith, Bruce, Vince AND Brent. As far as original material goes, sure Way to Go Home sucks but how about Tons of Steel? I Will Take You Home? Those songs are at the bottom of the GD barrel IMO. If you listen to some of the people on this site you would think that the GD was Brents backup band. Ridiculous! The fact is we never would've even heard of any of these keyboard guys (besides Hornsby's 80s pop confections) if wasn't for for one Jerry Garcia. How does losing a non-original member mean the end of the Grateful Dead? I could maybe see placing the end of the 'Good Ole Grateful Dead' when Pigpen died, or at the "Farewell" Winterland run in 74, or even when Keith and Donna left. But when Brent died? C'mon man, I dont see a huge drop off between 89-90 and 91 myself, and 93 has grips of all time versions of tunes (4-5 Deal, 5-26 Playin, 6-15 Dew, 6-23 Terrapin, 8-22 Help>Slip>Franks, 9-22 Estimated ect...).
As far as this show goes, I wouldn't give it 5 stars, even for 92 (5-31, 6-25, 12-6, & 12-16 rank much higher for me). But its still a fun show. Classic old timey first set with solid Jack Straw>Sugaree to open and cool Speedway>Promised to close. Scarlet>Fire is nice and bubbly with alot of midi effects adding to the jam, perhaps Jerry relies on the midi a little too much in this Fire though. Vince also stumbles a few times in the Fire jams. Rare Smokstack into Drums. Beatutiful China Doll. Picture perfect Attics encore finds the harmonies and playing spot on. Probably my favorite Attics from any era, bar none, and a perfect example of the harmonies the boys were capable of in the Vince era. The Miller SBD sounds better to me than this sbd though.
3 1/2 stars for show and 3 for sound.

No good recording circulates of this show
The AUD and SBD both suck. This is a first gen cassette source, yet already there's a lot of wow and the pitch is fast. You can make this downloadable, Archive - no one's going to grab it anyway. >:-(

average
average at best. Agree with the "doc". How nights 1 and 4 of the halloween 91 run at Oakland are not slam dunk 5 star gigs is baffling. The again some of these clowns who give 95 shows 5 star ratings are probably saying the same thing about me.
Night 2 at the meadowlands in June, the 2 Greensboro shows in the spring. A few of shows in the Boston garden run in the fall, RFK that is on View from the vault. marsalis at MSG. I could go on. All 5 star 91 gigs.

Post Brent
Dead Pod,
This is coming from someone who thinks VW is one of the worst things that ever happened to the Dead, but dude there are many gems post-Brent. This ain't one of them, and the vast majority are in 1991, but if you can't give a post Brent show like 10/27/91 five stars, then I worry about you, bro.

Best of the 90s
I agree this was probably the best of the 90s, and brought me back to my salad days! But just because its a good show, doesn't warrant 5 stars.

Scarlet > Fire!!!
This is an outstanding show. One of the best of the 75 that I saw. The Scarlet > Fire is insane and VERY underated. Jerry's horn guitar jams in Fire are some of the best of the 90's. The first set is highlighted by a nice Jack Straw and a hot New Speedway > Promised to close the set. Bobby is smokin' during the Sugar Magnolia and Jerry is great during the China Doll. The audience and SBD's available are both nice.
