A little thin
While the sound is crisp and clean, Phil is way down in the mix and the overall sound is a little thin. That being said, the playing is pretty good. Some of Vince's synth sounds are a little hard to handle in spots. But the show is good overall. I'm always a sucker for a nice build up into the Wheel, and this one delivers.

In the Land of Hampton Roads
03/05/92 - solid. SB alittle low, but audio's perfekt. show represents HQual GD shows, early 90s - i'll call it orchestral, MIDI-fied jerry -- Their sound in 92 is what it is, brutha, and if they didnt change, they wouldnt be the dead...Pioneers of the best sound avail. Shoot, its Hampton! The show was fun as sheet. The boyz were into it - and smilin lots. Hampton: home to the Warlocks return! - its a fun one...

Hmm
I like the speed of Help > Slip > Franklins. It's slower than some of the other ones during this time period.
But I don't like some of the piano play. It's like tinker bell flying through the forest. It sounds like a clavichord piano. It's just a little much. The grateful dead sound SOUND is different in later years. They must have changed instruments, uses different amps.

old school
Very rarely do I get outside of my '72-'78 comfort zone. Like all old timers I got frustrated at actually needing to have a ticket in advance of a show. That said, this show rocks. Jerry sounds hotter than I'd heard him in a while. So Many Roads literally gave me goose bumps. There must be some more 90s nuggets out there now I've got to find them

fear and loathing in hampton
First of all, Hampton is a spaceship, and an awesome spaceship to see a show in at that. Almost seemed sac-religious that mc hammer and u2 (yes i dont like u2, sorry) were playing in the same ship that week. Well, they started with help-slip-frank. they opened up the last 2nd set I saw (6-14-91) with the same thing and I found this to my liking. sure the rfk version was hotter but a help-slip is a help-slip. What I mostly remember was the kid in front of me who was x'ed out and dancing so hard that he had me pinned back against an obese woman dancing with equal-dionysion-fervor. My feet never touched the ground, as I was held up by this woman's enormous breast while the kid in front unknowingly beat me with his flailing elbows. There is probably a lesson here somewhere, or atleast a metephor. The rest of the set was short but sweet but I had to find new confines for the 2nd set. 2nd set was solid, with an eyes, he's gone, wheel, so many roads. I was more than satisfied. well, sort of, see I missed the 89 warlock shows so I obviously had inflated expectations of absurdly wonderful set lists. That aside I was satisfied. Allright, I was just really bummed I missed 89 but it was still a good show. Atleast I got to watch a half-naked hippie-zombie rub oranges all over his body throughout the second set. Somehow thissight has changed me in a wonderfully horrible way. Us blues encore, always nice (but not dark star, attics, death don't nice but who's complaining)and home we go. My friend at is first show and wearing way too many hippie clothes (he's dressing for the occassion a bit hard)and I can't help to make fun of him the whole way home despite the fact that they are my clothes. but I would never were them in that combination, atleast not before spring. anyway, i piss him off (he's tripping) and karma gets me because we get lost in South east D.C. (not a good thing) and we get back to late for me to get to sleep before my big exam, which i fail and then get kicked out of school. Oh yeah, the show, it was great, but I'll always remeber it as the beginning of the end because vince interjected himself in the heart of the second set and continued to do so just about everynight til 95. so now we have estimated-samba-eyes instead of estimated eyes for ever more. ouch

Some of the best of '92
I don't care what the naysayers say, THIS tour was awesome. Most say that '91 was the beginning of the end, some will even argue '90 was the beginning of the end. Listen to the Eyes, or the Estimated, or the He's Gone, or any of the other tunes, and tell me that it doesn't rival some of the best the Dead did in the 90's...I will make the argument that after this tour, the beginning of the end had taken flight...There wasn't too much after this that was CONSISTENTLEY hot, there was pockets of beauty (summer 93), but not whole tours that just smoked.

Up Front
There was only one line of people between myself and Jerry @ this show. I was fortunate enough to see him play from this vantage point a few times (Warfield Theater being the high points of my 'career'), and this was the Most Unpleasant Grateful Dead concert I ever saw.
Garcia looked like he rather would have been ANYWHERE but THERE. Glaring @ Phil. Ignoring Bob. When they opened with Help On The Way - the crowd went Nuts. (As expected.) Garcia looked out over the crown with a look that can only be desrcibed as "Jeez - Can't you people tell we're just throwing you a bone?" It was bordering on Disdain.
I had seen them about 20 times at this point, and it was obvious they (specifically Garcia) were NOT 'into it' anymore. It is somewhere around this time that Bruce Hornsby 'called Jerry out' for Crimes against Music. I know why. Jerry didn't give a Damn that night.
Fortunately I saw some WONDERFUL shows May/Summer '93 all over the country that reaffirmed the band for me. (Not to mention a series of SMOKIN' JGB shows...)Everyone has downtimes in their lives/relationships...
Anyway - going back an listening to this GREAT SOUNDING recording of that most uncomfortable night for me 13 years ago has been a good experience. Just listening to the music and not having to watch Jerry scowl and grimace @ us and his bandmates the whole time is an enjoyable experience, a good concert.

A Hampton comedown
These shows were all about bringing this place back to earth from the GD history that was made here in '89. These shows were fun; always great to be here. The shows were a little blah, maybe we all thought that some more crazy shit was going to happen on par with '89 and then the boys delivered 2 solid if somewhat predictable shows. Not a necessary run in terms of the music.

Come on...
This is a decent sounding show; I've downloaded at least 20 that are better. As for show quality; I was there and this was a fun show, and Hornsby is outrageous, but I agree with another reviewer--Vince destroys a bunch of tunes.
Better than Cornell...not even close.

1st show
I remember tickets going on sale outside of my dorm at the Mosque (a venue that the dead played at back in the day), so I purchased two tickets for each night. I am so blessed to have these recordings; (1) because it was my first show. 2)I lost my head that night:) The Help/Slip/Franklin's opener is tight. The Eye's as a second set opener is sweet!
Now I know why they call the coliseum the spaceship because I was transported somewhere else that night. I remember coming out of the show and running into a wall of fog that had blown in from the coast; it was the icing on the cake to such a spectacular first show. The sound quality of this download is the best I've happened upon in here. Download it it's worth it.

Got busted
This was a great show for me, got busted earlier in the day, made bail, made the show in peace. The next day i got some real trouble though. The police in Virginia are brutal.During So many roads Jerry had a music stand in front of him, this was before the lyrics monitors.I was about 2 or 3 people back right in front of the fat man,no seats on floor!!!!!!
The end of the last highpoint for the band with Hornsby.
I also rememeber that these were stealth shows.
They were not sold at GDTS or even on the hotline for the spring tour. But after 3 days in Atlanta the word was go to Hampton before the Maryland run.We got there early that morning and tickets had been on sale for a little bit so we got plenty for both nights.......

It in fact seems that the Dead had a special relationship with Hampton Coliseum, and this night was no different. I was among the sold-out crowd with 2 of my best friends, and nearly lost my mind when they opened with Help On The Way -> Slipknot! -> Franklins Tower. I Need A Miracle was the peak for me, and US Blues closed the show with a wonderful light show.
All-in-all a great night.
The sound quality of the download is top-notch, after a not-quite-mixed-right first few minutes.
Download this show, and enjoy!

Pristine '90s soundboard
This is one of the best sounding soundboards I've downloaded so far. The Hampton Coliseum always seemed to bring out the best in the Dead and this is no exception. Any show that opens with Help->Slip->Frank
was always a good sign of a hot night ahead. Download worthy!
