One hell of a last minute decision!
I was home from college and my brother and his friends headed down 95 to the show first thing in the morning. All morning and early afternoon, I went back and forth—should I go and meet them? Will I even be able to find them? Will I be able to buy a ticket from a scalper? Wouldn’t it be better to just get high and watch movies? But at the last minute, I jumped in the car and headed to Maryland. In a twist of good fortune, I crossed paths with my brother and we decided to go see if the box office was going to release tickets last minute. There wasn’t anyone hanging around, but we walked up to the window anyway. Score! 8 rows up in the Phil Zone with a great view of the show. And the sound issues that everyone mentions and that we heard discussed afterwards, weren’t an issue in our area. The reviews written before me are spot on—the first set was average. But the second set blew me away! The longer-than-normal intro to Franklin’s Tower was incredible, but I remember Jerry blowing the opening lyric. Listening now, you can hear him stumble a bit. The real life “fire wheel burning in the air” scared the bejesus out of me but added more thrills to the show. A couple of other things I remember—the crowd chanting “Our love will last not fade away” during the entire time we waited for the boys to retake the stage for the encore. And then during the encore, either Jerry or Bob (I cant remember which one) made a hand gun and pretended to shoot Phil. They lit the place up with that short but rocking encore. Man do I miss the Grateful Dead.

funny
This is the middle of the three days at Landover. It's one of those shows that everyone should have seen. As always the show starts off with boyz going thru the motions. The Second set starts with a Help>Slip>Franklin's Which is where the fun beings Next an Estimated (which if ANYONE was at the show) Someone on the floor throw a large ball of lit Flash paper into the air right when they sing "fire wheel burning in the air". ( I have been,at this point, to about 30 Shows) The next thing the place goes nuts! Bobby gets a fire under his @$$ and Jerry moves up to the end of the stage. I didnt come down until two days after the 3rd show. the sound is O.K. But seeing as how I have waited almost ten years to even hear it again who care's!! Thank You!!! this is happy
**************************************************
O.K. seven years have past and I wanted to hear this show and low and behold it is still here. I do stand corrected. This show is great from beginning to end. As the years have pasted and the longing for the carefree days of my youth creep in; I do find comfort in the little things like family and friends. I do still cherish a good boogie and this show has it. I did all three nights the 9th,10th, and 11th. I can not pass judgement on the sound, the set list, or the venue. I was there. I wish, I was still there meeting new friends and jamming in the lot. I want to say there are some people who post on this site which seem to LOOK for every little discrepancy. I say look for the positive, look for the gem in the rough. A Deadhead will be just that a Deadhead. "Once in a while you get shown the light

the sound was patchy....
I took my good friend,Coz,to this show.It was his 1st experience with Real life,on-stage Jerry...He couldn`t have been more thrilled!...Though where we were dancin`about, the sound was hit`n miss, real patchy...I noticed similar scenario`s inside,The Palace,Boston Garden as well as MSG...it must have something to do with an indoor arena and sound travel inside of an inclosed space(IDK??)...but awsome,Help>Slip>Frank and a stellar,Stella Blue..Other than that, alot of the same tunes I had been hearing throughout most of`94....But you won`t ever hear me complain,as long as the GD were playin`,they were puttin`a smile a mile wide on my face!!!........*afternote*~~leaving this venue,we got into a chemically caused accident on the highway....real scarey stuff. The weird thing about it was,we were the only car involved,in fact,no one at all for miles was around...and we were on64 west(a major interstate in VA)The driver saw some"thing",not of this reality, slammed on the brakes,so hard that the front wheels actually both pointed inwards afterwhich!!....Luckily,we limped to rest area, and sat in the car till the sun came up,thinking of what had just happened(or what we"thought"had happened!)..needless to say,we had drank the kool-ade and reality wasn`t our strong point at the time......to sum it all up,2 words,"GOOD TIMES!"

Well Rounded
For the people that say this show didnt start goin until the 2nd set - i beg to differ.
Right off the bat you have Jerry playin around with the Midi in Iko - and while it may be a snore of an opener for some, it always was a great tune to get me dancin' right away. Vince even took the liberty of a lil keys solo during the mix. Im sure there will always be better versions of certain songs, but i was more impressed with this short 6 pack first on this evening then i was the ending of the second set the following night.
Walkin Blooz to me is similar to Little Red Rooster in the sense that its hard to find outright crappy versions of these songs. Usually a lil slide work on both- and generally decent first set songs that tend to set the bar for the rest of the night. In this one, you can hear Jerry putting fourth some good guitar pickin' and Bobby doesn't sound ... well ....Uninspired. Once again, Vince seems to pick up some slack with some wonderful piano work. People shouldn't have picked on him so much. He generally did a very good job once he got used to it.
Althea sounds great from the start. Jerry sounds strong- the boys sound on. I love listening to the SBD of this one. This should have been the indication people needed to know they were in for a good night. With only one minor flub at the begining of a verse, this is one of the more coherant, straightforward Althea's you get out of Jerry this year.
Desolation Row is what it is. One of my favorite and flawless versions of this tune came in '91 @ a shoreline show that was proceeded by a first set Dark Star. Most since have felt, well, just plain long and lackluster. Unfortunately, the same holds true here.
If you didn't stand on your feet and dance when Loose Lucy came up, you would have had to check to see if you were still alive and had a pulse. Although the guitar playing was a little weak, it sounded like Jerry was goin for somethin on the Midi on his solo mebbe and missed it? in either case, the solo was not as crisp as even he would have liked it to have come out that night, but thats ok .... win some, lose some. It was still lyricaly strong and upbeat.
All i can say about eternity is, at this time, it was still a young song that neevr really had the time it needed to mature in the line up as a solid set ender. Later versions i have heard (including the unreleased studio version just before Jer passed) were much more promising. With that said, this version is not too bad. Everytime they played it tho, it got better =)
The rest of the set is as everyone else says; a pretty powerful brickhouse of classic tunes tastefully arranged for our listening pleasure. Without going into to much description - You can't help but to fall in love with a Help/Slip/Frank opener to the 2nd set. However, you may have been slightly disappointed if you had attended Deercreek earlier in the year. the Help/Slip/Frank combo played there in '94 tops almost all versions i have heard. However, Unlike Deercreek, this led off the set, and gave way to an extremely psychedelic trip into other realms with Estimated Prophet (and a fireball courtesy of fans on the mainfloor)melting into a wonderful Terrapin Station before fading away into the drums solo. Its tasty.
All in all this was a great show and it was a shame that is was followed up by a virtual dud.

A Good One
I attended all three of these Landover shows in 1994 and this was the best. There are some rough spots to be sure. The first set takes a little while to get going. Second set, however, is packed full of good material. The set begins with a strong Help> Slipknot before derailing a bit at the beginning of Franklin's. However, the boys take their time, find the groove, and finish the tune strong! Terrapin is especially nice with a lengthy jam. Overall, another good example of a fine Fall 94 Dead show. Sound is a little strange on this recording - drums are periodically very high in the mix.

Good Memory
I'd almost forgotten about this show until I stumbled across it here. The second set was fabulous. High energy (for '94 anyway) and some really special moments. I remember that flash during Estimated vividly! Could have done without the IFTL encore but overall a very solid set.

long slow rise
this was a hot show that started out seeming a lot more average than most shows i'd seen to that point. due to a relatively slow uptake in the first set i thought 'they're past it', but by the second set they were hauling the load and took the time to lay in some awesome jams. overall it was one fun show. franklin's -> estimated -> terrapin sure made me cheer. critics may say it wasn't their best show, but it does have a few gems, and as it was the last dead show i saw at that arena, it will always have a special place in my memory.
