I would say that my connection to the Dead scene would be based on the Wavy Gravy quote, "The man next to you is your brother" and obviously that is a universal
- ie- Sisters & Brothers or as the Allman's played it Brothers and Sisters
The religious hypocrites ask"Who is my brother?"-
Jesus tells the parable of the Good Samaritan:
Which let's us know we are all brothers and sisters.
Anyway the way you may know that there are spiritual forces of darkness in this world is that despite folks best efforts. almost 50 years after Woodstock we find ourselves no closer to the utopian ideals of that generation. In fact it is not much of a stretch to say that our society is more divided , more violent and yes more blood thirsty then ever.
I am not saying I have a political solution because truthfully that is to me the one direction guaranteed to furthur divide.
Many say throw out all that divides and peace will come
HELP ME WITH MY CAUSE, Burn down all the buildings etc..
but if you remove the foundation of society then each one does what is right in their own eyes and the hard truth is the human heart is a dark place.
You say i am a pessimist. Well, the one constant we have had throughout Human History is the Bible
and the Scriptures say "the human heart is deceitful and desperately wicked"
I have lived in everything from Rainbow Villages to N.Y.C from the farmlands of California to Forest City ,North Carolina and the statement "what is a man deep down inside what a raging beast with nothing to hide" always holds true for others and myself.
"In my flesh no good thing dwells"
between friends ,family, lovers and strangers on the street. So my take is go back read that bible collecting dust. it is a mirror into the human heart.
(If that were all the Bible were it would be only a downer)
Yet, the Bible is also about God, A Holy God. A God who is not like us. The God who loves with perfect love and although it is hard for us to grok can even hate with perfect hate.
Anyway, many people trying to reinvent how to live when how to live has already been declared in Scripture.
And it is about Righteousness. A word i used to hear a lot but not so much these dark days. because when humans hate they become like what they hate and when humans love their love tends to consume the object of their love.ALTHOUGH I HAVE BEEN A STRANGER IN THE ARMIES OF THE NIGHT
So this all to say when the brother says it is his favorite show based on the Bertha I get exactly what he means.
Somebody else may think it a waste of time to even think in such times. i get that as well. I can see both points of view I hope you can too.
Jesus warned us if trying to get a speck out of our brothers eye it would be best to remove the Telephone Pole from our own eye.
All this to say I have been reading God's Word and listening to lots of good old GD. And I can tell you I am all the better for it. IMHO :)
As far as this show goes which i am listening to as I write so please don't cut me down because I am at Funiculi and really digging the music.
The reviews for this show are pretty good so i am not going to go song by song. As far as sound quality I noticed only a brief drop towards the end of Peggy-O
I have always kinda wondered how to compare the early years of the Grateful Dead with anything from after 75.
But I guess I just take them as different time periods. Since I was going to shows from 84-93-- I hardly ever listen to that era. (It is like i lived thru it.)
So that leaves me from 67-83 that I am trying to get under my ears before I even venture back to 84-93
I have listened to more 1977 this year so I am trying to separate the hype from the supernova hotness.
Oh a comment on this FOTD. I absolutely dig Donna Jean singing with Garcia on this tune. Slowing this tune down increases the tragic irony ending 10 fold,
Keith nice on Piano.
MUSIC such a sweet tune. It got jammed out pretty far usually as a 1st set closer in the 80's but i love these early year versions especially for Bobby & Donna but Jerry just noodles away.
For me following Jesus means that I trust in His perfect life for my souls rescue. For certain i know that i have gone thru the book and broken each and every law. And some say well just ask for forgiveness but the price of forgiveness in God's perfect economy is death. To make restitution for the wrong i have done the penalty is death and as a mortal i am unable to pay that penalty.THE DEVIl'S BARGAIN
Wow, Hot MUSIC exit jam. it sounds like Phil is slightly off in the
mix.compared to the rest of the musicians at least for that tune.
Anyway, Scarlet>Fire is listed as 1st set closer so i guess Bob just kidding about that break.
Vocals are a little hazy for Scarlet. reminds me of a 74 France tape i had which was very low vocals in the mix.
So the only one who could pay the price for sin is the perfect sinless One. Jesus is that fully human, Fully God. So able to live in my place as a man but also able to conquer death as God.So Jesus gave His PERFECT life for a ransom for my debt.
Did you ever wonder why a virgin Mary? Every girl i knew in Catholic school might have been a virgin physically but in our minds not so much. But a virgin birth is required so that Jesus be free from the fallen nature of man. ie- He is the Second Adam and unlike Adam He does not transgress. Amazing if you think about it because Adam had to only navigate Eve and the Serpent whereas as Jesus could relate to August West.
Half of my life, spent doing time for some other f@ckers crime.
The Scarlet jam is really good.Jerry gets the Wha-Wha going that he uses during Dancin, Estimated
Anyway, i really hope to see some Deadheads in heaven. Faith in Christ is open to everyone who will forsake this world of death.
Then you can truly be Grateful to be Dead.
Otherwise this world is all there is and judgment is all that awaits. Not because God is mean but because if you will not come to God for Mercy then the Bible declares that only certain judgment await. And one thing for sure you want Mercy from God not justice.
Heavy topic for the jam between Scarlet and Fire so enough said
"Dragon , with matches loose on the town"
Jerry "Talkin about a Fire on the Mountain"
great jam out of FIRE
I was thinking about Gil Scot Heron man that guy was a genius. He could play the Blues. He had a similar kinda soul to PIG and some of the pitfalls as well.
THE COPS DON'T NEED YOU
AND YOU KNOW
THEY EXPECT THE SAME
Anyway, something i liked about Gil Scot which reminded me of the vibe with the Dead when i was touring was not needing the government to provide the nipple. A self sufficiency that went as far as to say 'When other folks give up theirs, I will give up mine"
"Everything , Exactly Perfect"-Weir
Candyman-Second Set-yeah that would have been nice in the 80's for sure.
Never got that tune until I saw Jerry nail it in Vegas.
I went to a lot of shows and I pretty much went solo for the most part. I liked to dance and i liked to sing. i liked to twirl and i liked to float on air.
Funny these days i feel i have a connection to two worlds. My music is still the GD. and much of my heart is still fiercely independent. THIS TOM CAT HEART WITH WHICH I AM BLESSED.
Yet, I also have a deep connection to the Way. In many ways that connection supersedes all my other connections because it outlives this world.
ESTIMATED- 77 hands down the year for this tune.
This is one of those songs that was great to dance in because it really opened up. also liked SAMSON but that had the Drum undercurrent that led into a heavier
get down in place mayhem. DRUMS>SAMSON!!!!
PRAISE, GOD ALMIGHTY...
Psalm
1:6
A beautiful TERRAPIN STATION this had to be great to catch live in 77. The song is really much stronger than when it was first played in the beginning of the year. And then >Morning Dew.
I just view it as 3 encores after that DEW!
(wow 5 years since this was last reviewed)
Where have all the people gone , my honey
I GUESS IT DOESN'T MATTER, ANYWAY..
