s1 vg, s2 ok
s1 is very good, exciting. S2 is a bit more of a mess with aggressive Hornsby keyboards overrunning tunes he doesn't fully know (Saint & Comes a Time especially), and Garcia sort of defers to him unfortunately.

man alive!!
Holy smokes, does this rock. I love first sets and this one is choice. 91 was such a great year in my eyes (although I like every year!). This show rocks out of space, and I wish I had been there. great all around song selection and inspired playing.
As a latecomer to the Archive, all I can say is god bless jerry and the boys. good music, good times!

Two smokin sets of dead....
The hardest question about this show is which set was hotter. Tough to say. They smoked all night long. This show gets passed over because of the other shows at MSG and Boston Garden but this is one of my most listened to shows. I caught most of the shows on this tour and this is one of the better ones and, in my opinion, this show is one of the best of the 90's, not quite as good as 6/17/91 but what show from the 90's is? Jerry's voice is solid which is key because this was a heavy Jerry song night. Quickly during Stranger you can tell the band is confident. Towards the end of Stranger, Bruce throws down some great piano work. The Bertha is, in my estimation, a top 5 from this time period. Bob especially tears it up especially in the beginning. Jerry's first solo is one of my favorites of any Bertha ever. He just comes flying out of the gate with no let-up. Bruce totally compliments what Jerry is doing here and Bob also pipes in. This Minglewood Blues may be the best I ever heard live and it only gets stronger as it goes along. Is there a better Minglewood from the 90's? Everyone is taking whacks on this version. The jam after the second set of lyrics just goes on and on and is the reason why I think this Minglewood is hard to beat. You have got to listen to Bruce during this jam. He is clearly digging it. After this, Jerry runs through an instrumental Dire Wolf intro but then skips it for the best Must Have Been the Roses I have heard live. Then Jerry rips into a solid Dire Wolf. Jerry was hot to play tonight. The West L.A. Fadeaway is one of my favorite versions on tape. The Bruce intro work is real sweet. The Music Never Stopped comes out of the gate slow but works itself into a real monster. One of the top 5 I ever caught out of 100 shows. The vocals are especially excellent on this copy. As if thats was not enough, Jerry kicks in the best Don't Ease I think I ever heard live and it holds up on tape. It's a blazing version and no set ending throwaway. This is Jerry at his best for this time period. Bruce compliments the pace perfectly. The Miss 1/2 Step is the best I ever heard live. It's clearly meant to be a second set beast. Bob throws in some great licks on this one. St. of Circumstance is likely the second best I ever heard after the one from 6/17/91. Again, the Comes A Time here is the best I ever heard out of three. It blows away the one from Albany 3/27/93 imo. This Comes A Time is just about perfect and Jerry's solos here are inspirational. I would get this show just for the Comes A Time if nothing else. However this Uncle Johns Band is also tight as a drum. It may be the best I ever heard and one of the top 5 during the 90's. Of course Attics blew the place away. The band sounds very confident on it which is no small thing for this song. The Good Lovin and JBG indicate that the band was on fire this night. This is one heck of an under-rated show irregardless of the time period but it clearly shows that if you stopped seeing the Dead in the 90's because you thought they lost it, your very wrong imo.........

It's All So In-Sync You Don't Need Confirmation
A splendid performance and juicy recording. All the livelong fancy stuff of dreams. Great first set with minimal dropouts or perversions. Lots of graceful guitar work and interconnecting keys. Interesting second set jam ~ Vince starting it with a dazzling fugue-like calliope and circus organ so distracting that Jerry quickly takes up his axe and slays a lead-in that bridges the two very abruptly, appropriately, and then a long, disjointed jam ensues and becomes anger personified falling into the recuperative arms of GDTRFB.
The band is not only in-sync with each other but having a damn good time being that way by effortlessly hitting their marks like a voracious crow pecking the eye of its new-found carrion.
I sense this band, on this particular evening, did not think they sucked. Two clues: Attics, and JBG. These two set-ending songs were their signature to the audience that they believed they played well.

What a day off can do!
The boys rested on the 15th, so everyone came back fresh on this night. The first set didn't let up until "Roses" and even then the overall energy remained high throughout. My friend and I were still raving over "Comes a Time" all through "UJB" which was darn near perfect. A "Good Lovin'" closer was very welcome (versus, say, yet another "Throwin' Stones"). The audience recording on this site is good, but this soundboard is so crisp it's electrifying.

4+ stars
IMHO, this show is very underrated. Garcia's playing and singing is pretty rock solid throughout both sets. Comes a Time and Attics are simply amazing. Sound quality is a 5 easily!

Bruce Dominates
Bruce is all Over this show. Superior SBD from '91. Very underrated show. Bertha kicks ass and the Comes a TIme is a nice treat. Half Step is a cool 2nd set opener.

2nd best show of MSG 91'?
i was still feeling the rush from the branford night going into this one and i was blown away again. the room seemed oversold tonight, place was PACKED!! first set was long and hot. had trouble finding seats so i watched the band from the first walkaround on jerrys side and tonight he was dominating the show. i thought the set was over after music never stopped, and it didnt . set 2 was a fantastic run of jerry tunes. 1/2 step to open ( rare these days, or them days ) comes a time>unc johns>d/s>GDTRFB>attics the whole sequence of the second set was like dreams flowing gently into each other. the sound here is real good. i recomend you get this show and hear for yourself. the archive ROCKS!!! maybe soon you'll get somw widespread panic on here and some jerry garcia band too.

Way Underrated
This show fell in the middle of a run of other Garden gems and has been overlooked for too long! Set list seems average but performance is spot on. Half Step opener in set two rocks the house..comes a time is sweet..UJB is long and Hornsby filled. Post drums is tight thru the encore. queen Jane and Direwolf hilite Set 1. Sound is crispy clean. Check it out!
