Better late than never. I can answer your question as I discussed this specific performance with Ned in person. He's using an Arp 2600 synthesizer: "There’s a sequencer, but the sequencer is controlled by a program that sends it random or not random values that evolve over time...I built a rhythm box that synthesized rhythm sounds from popular electronics. Really. They’re tuned filters, resonant filters. They have high Q, they resonate when you ping them...I told Phil to come in after 8 or 10 minutes." Hope that helps. It definitely sounds a lot like music from many years later.
As for the performance and recording, 'nuff said: it's amazing.

I agree with the reviewer below, THIS IS THE BEST EYES EVER!! I had a cassette bootleg of this years ago and then lost it. What a sad time that was, until
...
I found out they put out the Grateful Dead movie on soundtrack. So I bought the 5 disc set just for the eyes and 2mrw is 4ever. When I played the eyes, I was totally bummed because about 4 minutes of the song had been cut out of it. I remember what it sounded like and this was not it. Those 4 mins. were crucial jerry jams that i needed to hear. the compilation "So Many Roads," has the eyes from this show on it, and its the whole 18+ min. not the 14 min. this soundtrack has.

The show that stands out at Winterland for being the most song-oriented on a VERY jam-filled week. Don't let anyone tell you they were getting tired in
...
October. It's the most mellow month, to be sure, but the jams are as exploratory as ever. Jerry's playing with a warmer tone and an advanced melodic touch even for a year in which he excelled in both. Perhaps the tone of the guitar presaged 11/20/78's.
Some people talk about the jam in the second set, and it's nice, but I consider even 10/20 to be more jammy.
As far as the jam portion of this show goes, the "Eyes" stands out for me, not the "Caution."
"Mama Tried," "Tomorrow is Forever," "Scarlet," it is these little songs that make the night. It's a stop in the bar before getting back in the canoe for one last romp in the jam flume of October (10/20).

This recording puts you THERE! The sound of the instruments and vocals sounds like a soundboard recording, but there is ALOT of "good" crowd noise (clapping
...
and chearing) that gives the recording an audience tape feel. The effect is of standing in the front row hearing the band cooking on stage with the audience going nuts around you. You HAVE to listen to this one and download if you dare - you may not listen to your other CDs again.

Band was downright emotional in that old barn, but doesn't exactly come across on tape. Probably a good thing Phil & Ned doesn't either. It was SO loud it was scary! There are moments here that are as good as any GD you'll ever hear, and it feels like they're right in the room with you. "He's Gone" is fantastic, "Eyes"
...
is jamtastic. There's also some moments where the sound is really weird--Jerry's guitar sort of disappears into the echoing distance at points--but overall, well worth having.

I agree - I really like this recording. It has that Europe '72 ethereal sound. Jerry's guitar comes in at all angles and the overall sound is very clean.
To ... make things better, they are inspired, fearless, and out to prove a point this night. They are in no rush, but still manage to charge through the whole show.
The extented Truckin' jam is a highlight. Def. worth adding to your collection.

The vocal's, Garcia's guitar, and KG's piano are upfront in this mix. The singers ---- e.g., Weir on Mexicali --- sound like they are standing three feet
...
in front of you. This is one of the few times (and the last) they did Tomorrow is Forever, and with the apparently retiring, you understood why. With the beautiful structure of this song, and its lyrics, it's not a mystery why Garcia took to it, and the band choose to try it out. Dire Wolf is played like a slower, fatter late 70's ballad; Garcia takes two solos. He has only brief one moment in the sun during Magnolia.
