good sound audience, in fact what makes it sound good is that the sound got to exist , so albeit noisy audience, most tend to concur these are occasionally way more better to hear than the clean board, where the sound only got as far as, well, the board, and not out into a room

the room reverbs and ambience is the thing that is almost never really caught on tape, and much of what made the sound so good at the venue, whichever venue, even if it was a shitty sounding place

sound that actually exists is a lot more interesting and noisy than sound that didn't so the extra life more than counteracts some noise

of course, you can't expect anyone who isn't already in love to want to kiss the sloppy drunk puking girl, which i guess is how any noise at all reads today, but i guess conversely that's what's missing in music, a bit of grit in your ear, the messy stuff

Subject: Trippy, Unique Second Set

I'm probably in the minority here, but I prefer this poor sounding audience recording to the Dick's Picks clean sound. Maybe it's because I first heard this version back in the summer of '87 one evening in Boulder after eating some shrooms...this second set got firmly implanted in my brain. The Wharf Rat, 1/2 Step, and Playin are all totally unique versions, and then the jams that follow are mindbending. I've had an audience of this set which is a bit fast, but I love it. When I heard the DP's version, it was as if all the magic were gone...sterile. I worked with a guy who said that he went to one of these shows from this run and that it snowed. True?

While the loose, bantery 1st set is quite entertaining on some levels, I'm not a fan of its musical blandness, which lives up to the usual Duck's Pucks standards. The 2nd set, however, is one of the coolest things I've ever heard. This is also a great recording.

its late and i'll add more later but suffice is to say this was a total mind fuck of a show . probably the best one i saw out of 103, definitely in my top 3 - 5 shows , ok 1 or two next to dp # 6 of which the scarlett fire was inspirational ,oh by the way 4 12-02-73 i was in the 17th row right center , anyone remember the pre show ballons and if anyone has a bootleg of this show it was me calling for 4 more hours when everyone was calling for an encore request lol oh so dosed further in my humble opinion is smokin saw them in madison and am gratefully dedicated as always

and don't want to shell out the $, then do yourself a favor and download this beast. It sounds like a good audience recording of an incredible show. The best parts, of course are on the release, so it's well worth your money. Playin'>MLB jam gives me the chills every time, especially when they go right away out of Playin' into the minor key theme (F , E , F-E-D; those are single notes, not chords). They tapped into something deep and heavy on that night. One of those shows that demonstrate the healing power of music.

Awesome. Simply awesome recording of this second of a two night run (11/30 &12/2/73)at the Boston Music. Lean five piece with Donna off tour with soon to give birth. The Half Step here is beyond solid. Listen for Phil to rail on about tunes played and so forth at the end of Ramble. Great Show and well done !!!

Great talk with the crowd. I think it's Phil who literally has a spotlight put on a narc in the fourth row.

Let It Grow is phenomenal. And farewell to you oh Southern skies, I'm on my way . . . . A good clean burn all the way around that really brings you into it. And this may be some of Jerry's alltime guitar work. Winding up with a statuesque Morning Dew.

This crowd is partial to the party. I had no idea they could play another polka besides 'Mexicali', but this one's fukingruuven. I love that the first set has dragged on so long they can't even finish Let it Grow a few inches short. Highlights? That RambleonRose is wound around tight. The 1/2step had my dancin' shoes all a'fire, the end is such an arching triumph with lots of high fives amongst former strangers. By the end of the meaty, high octane, Truckin' Jam, I was ready to go up and shake the Hand (ya dig).
FEELS like an AUD tape. Modern ones tend to lack that, but ...(sigh)... Glad it's still here.

the segment from wharf rat -> end of the show is amazing. the transition from half step into playin' sounds like they did it hundreds of times, and the mlb jam is probably my favorite, coming out of space that reminds me of someone driving you nuts by making noises with a deflating balloon.

Subject: Truly inspired

Based on the Playin' alone i would have to rate this as one of the best of '73. Average first set. But the playin' melts down and gets so far out that it sounds like they're fighting aliens, or dinosaurs. Get this one if you like quality weirdness. The aud source sounds pretty good too, I would suggest a slight cut around 2k (about 1-2 db), a small boost at 8k, and another around 125.
