The Other One
When the crazy modulated voice came out of the amplifiers that night at the very beginning of the other one it was so surprising and spooky. I am of the strong opinion that The Other One is THE backbone of The Dead, and everything that comes before or after is there to feed that fire, or help put it out. I could go on and on . This rendition is short, very intense, weird and fun and alone is worth listening to this show. Turn it way up and hold on.

We NEED Phil
The way I recall it deadtothcore was like this:
Crowd: "We want Phil."
Phil: "For those up front, let me tell ya, you can't always get what you want."
Crowd: We NEED Phil
Next song: Box of Rain
These were great shows.
I convinced my parents I was going down to visit Old Dominion University. Saw all my buds from high school at this show. Crashed out in the back of Trish's station wagon (at least I think that's how it went?!).
Joel, you still out there buddy? It's been too long, man. Gimme a shout out.

Another listen
This fm type SB is degraded by some analog generations, ...drums are totally distorted. Certainly not in the same class soundwise as the Dead's release of 3/27.
As for the show- Top 5 of 1988 easy, and much better played than the much lauded previous night. I was there for these three, and this one finally popped the cork cowboy Neal's busride.
5 Star show, but 3 star soundquality = 4 stars.

Good Sound. good performance with strong versions of most everything. Phil is obviously in rare form with his comments to the crowd.
Barely 4 stars in my opinion.

Solid Supperin'
Unfortunately, as the 2/27/88 show was commerically released, they will not re-release it to
archive.org/sugarmegs...but at least someone dissented in the 'money' camp - so we do have most of our shows back.
1st Set: About a minute of increasingly connected chords lead naturally give way to a very 70s sounding "Stranger." plenty of 'crazy' 'silky' nights. The jamming is airy but not revelatory. "Franklin's" is likewise enjoyable as the band is beginning to extend it from an abrupt seven minutes to a more comfortable nine. Before "Hey Pocky" (Brent spoils right after 'Frank') can make its appearance, there's at least 120 seconds and a message from Phil: "You's down there...how are all you folks down front? how are you folks down front? didn't your mommy tell you, U can't always get what you want...bunch of weisenheimer's huh?" Well, they changed their minds for a few out in front cause it's an above average, tender "Box" from here. "Push" is bright and bushy-tailored. "Walkin"'s got some backstreet dust kickin. Smokin! I'm all smiles during a liltingly yummy "Roses." Dawn emerges upon the vagrant "Masterpiece" and the beatific converges into another molecular form "Bird" Recommended are the sharp Dick Cavett shows whose open forum aura allows Janis to make a back-country imprint without making her conform to others...Cavett's a discussion facilitator not a dominating personality. Some wonderful moments during the 8's and 9's. One can feel the building clap along with "Music." Very fine.
2nd Set: Yea, so it's fine (rousing)this "Touch of Grey" they're pushing. Jerry's bringing some very clean ice-skating solos during "Man Smart." "Ship" has merit but it's overplayed, who who cares? "Truckin" groundedly sways. The outro jam is far more boistrous and explosive- Yea! "Drums" in the 2's and early 3's could be a Blue Man Group spectacle. Yea, "Space" but how about this galaxina of a ride through the outer spheres of "TOO" though enough of the end result is grounded leading to a fair enough version of "Stella Blue" that fails to hit transcendence but is well-worked. "Throwing" is stirring and the evidence of a good show silently is expressing themselves on the band's faces. Third show entails a little "NFA." A fair enough of good time groovin lies within these borders.
Surprisingly, a buoyant "Mighty Quinn" closes off a successful '88 run on Beachfront Virginny.
3 1/2 stars

hampton
this is one of those 2nd sets that looks pretty standard, mostly shorter tunes before drums....you know the profile....doesnt draw you in at 1rst glance. even the common tunes are played with gusto, women are smarter sizzles, jerrys leads are so razor sharp. it was easy to "let yourself go" during this period, elevation stability was all but assured. we didnt know how good we had it at the time. even then there were heads who would say "this is nothing compared to the shows in '77, 81', etc. and you cant really say they are wrong. i saw people losing their minds at shows in '93, 94' when i was bored stiff, enjoyment is often affected by past experiences. However, i would urge the previous reviewer to revisit 3.26.88 and give it another listen. whats not to like. i remember many times going beserk inside hampton and wondering if the people driving by on the interstate could feel the vibrations. if they only knew what was going on inside this place.........

takes time sometimes
I was at all three shows, the first night was wacky but not that well played, voted best show of the year by duprees diamond news (I believe), bah, second noght was awsome, jerry was going nuts at the end of fire and he nips the hey jude catterwalling in the bud that mars so many otherwise great shows. The boys never stopped giving it their all but seemed a little burn't after the night before, or was it me? The show is very well played up to truckin where they finally hit their stide at a level just below the night before, other one and not fade away are major meltdowns played without wiping out, just folding back around and striding on!

What a great run
The only thing I can suggest is getting all three from this run..and while you are at it get the next 3 nights in jersey. I was at the Jersey shows, wish I was at these, Garcia gleamed every night. First set stranger>Franklins. Phils voice is stable and sounds great during Box, Roses and Masterpiece..ooze with the captain's guitar licks. Second set Otherone>Stella fantastic.
Sound quality is A+. No doubt folks get the other 2 nights of this run, and tinker a bit with the jersey nights...

Great Show
Went to all 3 of these shows, and I was pretty wiped out by this time, but I will never forget this show. We ALL went crazy at the start of Box Of Rain, and the Quinn absoutely blew me away.
Recording sounds pretty good too...

monday night rocked
my buddy and i were the only two of our clan that stayed for this monday show after smoking sat and sun shows. what a treat. stranger jam into franklin's was sweet. phil is coaxed to the mike for box of rain. he has some problems with lyrics and sings "please don't be supri-i-ised if you find me forgetting them." push to shove has some good jerry guitar. birdsong was stretched out. woman smarter, ship of fools, truckin jam and throwin stones were strong in 2nd set, with bob on the pink guitar for throwin. the two nights before this show get all the props, but don't leave this show off. they were tight during this run, especially the captian's guitar. there could never be enough thanks to those that are making this archive happen. i hope it comes back to you 10 fold.
