I'm not always a huge fan of post Brent, but I think this show has a sense of purpose that nearly no other show does.
Artistically, this is raw. They're ... not having fun. You have the sense they are actually exploring something intimate through reinterpretations of everything that has come before. The following night's Halloween show comes close, but the exploration is nearly over by then.
I feel like I'm listening to something on the level of Nina Simone, here... Just raw power and emotion

It was only two months earlier when I last saw Uncle Bobo.
I introduced him to my Mom and Brother up on the Mt. @ Squaw
on his dirt bike and he was very ... nice and gracious stopped for a minute to chat when we were hiking down. Heavy somber mood not only with Bill's ( and Melissa and Steve's ) tragic passing but the Oakland hills fire on 10/20/91. Several folks I knew lost evo including ttickets... The boys did come through, we didn't know it at the time but 10/31/91 would be the last shows us westsiders would see with Bruce. Speaking of BH ( take a listen to what he does in Sugar Mags ) after " take me and I wander ' round " the band does a couple of rounds before Bruce takes the Rogers Hornsby bust ( Old time HOF baseball player- no relation to BH) that he kept on his piano and chucks it into the crowd then completely pounded the living daylights outta the ivories esp w the left hand! I also remember him standing up for his funky Korg M1 piece during Mona ( what a treat ) great run of shows 10/30/91 pre drums was good but the rest kinda meh.
10/28 was killer I tthought.. Esp liked the jam outta Playin ( sans Jerry) everyone
Which was too bad he split from that. Everyone mentions 10/28 for the B.G.P opener but I swear Billy and Mick recreated a helicopter crash into high tension wires during rhythm devils!

The only thing I can say about 10/31/91 was its was the closest thing to an acid test they did since 65! " Buffalo Bill is DEFUNCT!

As for this show, you can really hear the boys consciously playing their hearts out on this one. Very emotionally charged performance. Everything is very very excellently, thoughtfully, emotionally played. This has to be one of the best 2 or 3 shows from '91.

interesting set. I've always been a QSMS fan and so I really like this Mona..Bone chillin'!! Carlos doesn't over do it but is an equal part in the playing. This voyage in exploration takes you places..please give it a whirl>Forever Grateful>Forever Dead!!!!

listen to his Eastern- influenced jams during Iko>Mona>Jam. If you listen carefully you'll notice both Jerry and Carlos completely let him go off on 2 occasions. I was never a big fan of QSMS, but holy criminy is he the shit!

Graham and Brent were eventually part of the demise. BG was such a vital part of who the The Dead were. At any rate I loved this show and Iam Grateful for many things today as it is Thanksgiving. Iam grateful for this site and the music of the Grateful Dead and how it still touches and inspires my life on a daily basis. Thank you...:)

This one is for Bill done with respect and conviction. The boys are determined to play unerringly, and they succeed with all elan'.
Yet, they are not ... so somber as what would wont evening sorrow, no, they shall not give themselves over to grief, but to ecstasy. As a result of such conviction, this is a show that is great from the get-go to the last breath.
By my recollection, the only time Bill Graham ever called a rock and roll band, "The Greatest Rock and Roll Band of all time" and "They're the greatest band that there ever was" was when he said that about our Grateful Dead back in 1974, during the filming of the Movie, and again, in 1978 during the Closing of Winterland. Perhaps these were two very significant times for the expression of personal connection 'tween the Boys and Bill. And he did say it best. "They're the greatest band there ever was."
This show says that.
And more.
Every song.
There is no Sunshine Daydream! I can't recall, did anyone else notice?
There is no ending. There is only a new
Beginning.
Start right now.
If you listen carefully to the stage banter, you will hear the band joking with each other and having a really good time of yukking it up, admittedly for Bill. It was their way of handling the pain.
SugMag>Sugaree, Walkin, Althea, Masterpiece, Candy, a cascading Cassidy and Touch are all well-played, determinedly well-played, for Bill. You can hear it in every song. This is one of the most flawless first sets that I have heard from this era. And, save for the over-enthused caused clam on the final crescendo of Touch's final chorus, I will bet the second set is not a comedown!
And, of course, it isn't. All of it superb and casting into Ship of Fools. Bill Graham was the captain, and the champion for the Grateful Dead.
And here we're are all once again. New Cycle. And...
New beginning's made alive! For right now, listening to this, and simultaneously realizing that it was later than I thought when I first believed you. Now i cannot share your laughter."
"Oh, ye, of little faith."
"The mustard seed planted will grow. If you could but believe the size of a mustard seed, it would produce a tree whose roots would move mountains."
The additions of guest musicians makes for some interesting moments. Iko has the most wickedly and nasty Jerry solo, evil as much as uplifting, for...it would all resolve....into...Mona!
Oh, my Jerry G.! He was for the first and only time decidedly louder in the mix. He just takes over like King Kong stomping through the village.
"This is for you, Bill. Thanks."
And all the rest, all of the second set: great ~ right down to the last drop of that kool-aid.
Every square inch of this performance and recording is magnificent.
I must go down on record as this show being reckoned as one of the greatest shows they ever played.
There exists one final question: Is there video?"

...
Althea was real laid back. 93-95 it was a little fast, with Garcia lucky to remember half the tune. This is the year, this is the night! Best Althea of the decade!

1991 was a really good year. Sadly, we lost Bill. I remember lots of folks back in 80s and 90s used to talk down about Bill because of increases in ticket
...
prices, more and more restrictions on the scene in the parking lots and a bunch of other stuff like his very pro-business orientation. However, the truth is that without Bill, much of what went on with entire SF scene and the Airplane, Santana and especially the Dead would never have happened. So, it was only fitting the boys sent Bill out in style with these shows. I'll never forget a moment of any of them. The show in the Park that capped this run was incredibly full of emotion: both joy and sadness. This first show was a great, great show. One thing I haven't seen in the reviews is any mention of Gary Duncan coming out to play! He's incredible during Mona, simply taking us back in time to the Fillmore. Santana came out too. It was such a great night. Opening with Bill's fave and then ripping out the Sunshine Daydream in the Park on a beautiful sunny day. Thanks so much for posting this show.

Well it's happened, the old tape has finally worn out. Unfortunately, I didn't discover this show on archive until after the downloads stopped.

These shows saw the "Boys" rise to the occasion if not still a little stunned . They mourned for a friend with an emotionally charged heart~felt show...the
...
powerful driving & compact Althea just soars. The sweet entrance of SugarMags into Sugaree , the first set has the respect and feel of wakeful remembrance all throughout , each song played as a tribute piece for Bill ..and then for all our own mortalities. Like the celebration of death thru life , this show shows restraint as it builds into hot jams that are completely filled with that soulful "dream~essence" of each man's heart playin' that stage that night . This is who we are ... this is what we do ... and tonight we did come together to do it our ever~lovin' best !
And sweetly did they play...my oh my~oh , did they come to play.
Attention! ... Attention !!----->5 Stars for this very powerful show , that beautiful mix of the rockinest *sweetest* with the bittersweet...a beauty and

No one knew what to expect after the shocking events just 48 hours earlier. So the boys ultimately did exactly the right show, from the Sugar Mags Opener
...
to the Blistering Althea, and all the way through the 2nd set with the wonderful guest Jams. They rose to the occasion and rocked the house in a celebration of his life, as he would have probably wanted it.

Bill had passed only days before. We knew we were in for something special. Sugar Mag opener of course, (the SSDD closed the Dead's set at the official
...
memorial about a week later) and we all cried. TOG "we will survive" another touching moment to end the 1st set. Awesome Iko jam into Mona...listen for Jerry starting to sing "Hey Bo Diddley" b4 Bobby takes the lyrics. Sidenote:the 6-cd jerry retrospective has a studio jam version of Bo Diddley. Duncan and Santana tore up the jam as Jerry was ever the gracious musician and laid back. Heaven's Door closed what was likely one of the most emotionally-charged shows in the band's history. Get it.

in the spring of '97, while living in Stockholm, Sweden, my mother passed away...upon hearing the news, I needless to say wept profusely; heart racing and tears flowing I proceeded to vent by throwing open my downtown apartment windows and playing set II as loud as I could! the four guitars on Iko>Mona could have gone on forever if I had my way...such a warm and loving show, but with teeth at the same time
surely this show holds a special heartfelt place for many people and fans alike...and I am truly grateful to all those who care enough and have the know how to make this reunion possible...my ears and heart have not heard it for years now. all good things in all good time

Mickey Hart nearly kicked over his drum kit during the jam of the Sugar Mags opener - was literally kicking his drums in an emotionally charged performance.

I gather he was especially close to Bill Graham and understand the Dead chose to open this show with Sugar Mags b/c it was Bill's favorite. Then there was not a dry eye in the Coliseum during the appropriate and touching Knockin' encore. Great memories of a great show and BGP era. Thank you Bill.
