Has anyone noticed the similarity between "Pain In My Heart" to Joplin's "Piece Of My Heart"? Piece appears to be a faster version w/ the same melody & rythym. After a quick search on AllMusic.com, it appears that Piece was written later by Berns & Ragavoy originally for Erma Franklin, and Pain was actually performed earlier by either Otis Redding or Willie Dixon.

Pig does a good job, but Janis made the definitive one. I only see it listed on the archive in one other show where it is bluesier & improved, but loses it's "Piece" type qualities.

I ended up getting this show on a CD printed by "Red Robin Records", one of my most precious CDs. A friend let me have it years ago....his loss....my "grateful" gain. Well played show for the early years. It must have been the venue. Energy + Emotion = Evolution.

This is a must hear or have to anyone who loves early Dead. Big Boss Pig!!!!

Hard to believe this is only 1966. This primal jam just goes on and on, and at times is surprisingly sophisticated! (A- 98 pts)

I'm a devout agnostic but I think this show may indeed be proof of God's existence...or the existence of something divine. Good Lord.

After 40 years this music stand the test of time. When I heard it for the first time way back I anticiapted this very day . . . keep on rockin' children . . . Bird lives!!!!!!!

I wonna be back to the years. Great music, great beatyfull time. Underground music - hippies - freedom and Grateful Dead, God I'am homesick.
For that time fantastic soundquality.
And the bluesy voice of Pigpen!

The Grateful Dead at their best. Cream Puff War defines the essence of their improvisational all-for-one and one-for-all credo with Garcia exploring the outer limits. As always you can listen to Phil Lesh just for his lines alone and Pigpen really shines. The recording has that great LIVE sound. I guess everyone has their own tightly held belief in what the Grateful Dead may or may not be. For me this is it.

This is really great, it shows how good they have always been. The sound is great and they play their songs and the covers very well, and full of excitement.

And I'm sure the review below me was trying to compliment them, but a garage punk band comes no where near the dead, the dead have awesome musicianship and song writing skills, while punk bands have horrible amateur everything.

This is a must have show. The Dead sound like a garage punk band they're so energetic. Pigpen's rollicking organ is way up in the mix and it's cool to hear how integral he was to their early sound. Garcia and company play with bluesy abandon. A really dynamic show from the very early years of the Dead, stream it now.

An excellent stereo mp3 SBD is still at gdlive.com. A real surprise - much better sound quality than many late 60's shows. Worth every star!

Are you SERIOUS? This show if off-the-hook. Parts of Smokestack sound like garage-punk music. Is there any Genre that the Dead haven't influenced or at least made their contribution to? I doubt it. This show is so enjoyable. This site almost makes me want to g to work everyday so I can hear another show or two. Thanks to all involved!!

This was it man, I mean, really it! The freaks were just about beginning to happen, and it was here! You're hearing it. This was one of the nights when the Fillmore was just beginning to be the Fillmore -- Bill Graham's Fillmore anyway; just a bunch of kids and odd intellectuals and wierd post-beatnik types tripping and the lights flashing and Bear is probably still on the boards, and his chemicals have altered the room. You can hear it here; I hear it now in the groove of "The Same Thing" -- in Jerry's crystalline, yet reverbing guitar, in the whine of Pig's organ, in the feedback, in the incessance of Billy and Phil, and Bobby melts into it all into the rave-ups.

Wow, this is so groovy. It is embryonic but inspiring Dead at the groovy garagey incipience of the San Francisco scene. The Summer of Love is months and months away, and by then the Dead are moving on. This night captures all of this vibe so well.

So much is good: "Cream Puff War," "He Was a Friend," "The Same Thing," almost everything; rare cuts too; Primal Pigpen.

How can this not be a 5. It's historical and brilliant in its own way. It's not fair to rate it otherwise. And the sound is damn good too -- quite amazing for such a deep archival moment.

Excellent show! Great quality! I loved Beat It On Down The Line, High Heeled Sneakers and The King Bee. It was nice hearing Pig Pen singing on The Same Thing. This is a definate must have for anyone that likes The Dead. God Bless The Grateful Dead!!!

Sound quality is only a 3 or so(not so bad for a '66 tape), but playing is superb. I would be very interested in finding more info on the actual setlist for this show. I've seen it listed with Cold Rain & Snow as the opener, followed by High Heel Sneakers, as well as the Dancing in the Streets set 1 closer. I'm enjoying the playing on all tracks, regardless of correct order!

As far as shows from '66 go, this is a really great show. They should officially release this and other early shows in the Dick's Picks series. Not, that we really need them thanks to archive.org

My first tape. I bought it from a store that was actually selling bootleg tapes!!! A true, true classic performance of the early era. Easily the one tape I would choose if I had to pick one from '66. My favorites are the rockin High Heeled Sneakers, and the obvious highlights of awesome Pigpen performances of Same Thing and Smokestack>King Bee.

Anyway, I have never seen the Dancin' in the streets anywhere. Does it really exist???

There is a far better version circulating than the one listed here. Upgraded version corrects setlist and includes the Dancin' In The Street performed this night.

Great old vintage Grateful Dead. Pig Pen at his finest. Great sound quality for such an old show.
