The week of the show was one of the hottest heatwaves SF had seen in decades. I drove all night from Boulder, CO with 3 buddies from UC Boulder in a VW GTI. Show was an awesome way to decompress from the ride. BTW show was alot of fun.

These shows had high audience energy; shoreline was so amazing back in the day.

stopped in to hear this shows master piece, I stayed until the encore. cant complain solid show.

I especially love the transition from Maggie's Farm right into Cumberland Blues!!! They don't drop a beat!!

I was lucky enough to be at both of these Shoreline shows. The First time the Band ( or any band) had played there. Uncle BoBo drove around the parking lot on his Golf Cart trying to curtail some of the Illegal activities. But this show had lots OF Vitamin L flowing in the Lot. Jerry had been named a few days before this as the Bay Area's best guitar player or it was in Guitar Mag. cant remember. But, As I remember he was playing his ass off this night. Parked Next to 2 Highschool buddies from 2000 miles away, should of seen our faces when we realized(trippin)

Very good show and a grtae remaster by Jay Ashley. Sounds wonderful.

Wow. I'm easy to please, but having been jamming this show this afternoon at the office and it is choice. big big fan of this setlist. jerry sounds crisp to my simple ear.

I also think Esau is an underrated bobby tune. I've heard versions that make me laugh because they're so good, and others that make me laugh because they're soo bad. I wish GD would have made this particular song gel more(no pun intended). But nevertheless, enjoy THIS version because ITS THE LAST TIME THEY EVER PLAYED ESAU. And,as previously stated, if you want to see and hear it: it is the last song (bonus footage) on View from the Vault 3 (R.I.P. Brent7/26/90)

Wow- what an interesting Candy man. The solo flight has some kind of effect on it that makes it really spacey and fine- and it was a good tasty solo to boot- give it a listen.

1st Set: "Hey Pocky Way" is breezy and a good opener. Dancing comes by easy for this "Minglewood" but it doesn;t resonate that much besides Jerry and Bobby's interplay halfway throigh the song. Jerry's heavenly solo makes "Candyman" work; his singing is another story. Yay, an "Adams Family" teaser...why was that left off of View III? "Masterpiece" is spirited. "West LA" is only standard. "Esau" is skippable despite some fine Jerry licks. "Bird" elevates this show to a different stratosphere. "Music" starts out weakly, but it's the right call. Not too shabby of a close.

2nd Set: Uncle Jebediah's grabbed himself a fiddle. Well, either "Mag" or "Cumb," the bass isn't as evident, we're looking at "Maggie." Jerry's got a firm hand on his verse of the proceedings and Brent's there with him every step of the way. Phil's got a deep groove circulating the sound. Brent's just outstandingly playful at the song's end. 'Wheee, yay' says Brent to "Cumberland." Not the longest version, but sweet just the same. Time to start getting emotional, "LLR." Touchingly performed. "Terrapin" is nice, but Brent's the only musician making any distinctive noise...and his activity is distracting to the song. "Drums/Space" are both creatively appealing; Jerry and Brent are taking off during the ensuing "OO." "Stella" is magnificently adorned with surprising tuneful lead solo choices. "Throwing" is certainly compelling if not dy-nomite. "Lovelight" does what it does, if not in particularly novel fashion.

A loose "Quinn" finishes off this evening of highly fluid performances.

Short show by their standards, I could actually fit this comfortably on 2 CDs. They were ON this night, and the sound quality is superb on top of that.

Hey Pocky is one of the only Brent songs that I really liked very much, and this is a great version. Love the end of the first set, finishing off with Esau (a very underrated Bobby song), Bird Song, and Music Never Stopped.

A great 1st half of the 2nd set starts with a surprising Maggies Farm>Cumberland Blues, then mellows with beautiful versions of Looks Like Rain & Terrapin. Hot Lovelight to finish the 2nd set and a fun Mighty Quinn to finish off a great night. Another great show from '87.

As far as I'm concerned this full show should have been the main course on VFTV 3. Why the "Maggie's>Cumberland" wasn't included on the filler is beyond me. Hopefully, someday we'll have access to the full video.

I think the filler from a view from the vault III with the first few tunes of this show is incredible. The best DVD I've ever seen. You've got to see Mickey during the Minglewood, (of course) Jerry during the Candyman, and check out Jerry and Bobby during Masterpiece. The whole band is absolutely hilarious at this show. Listen to the Maggies > Cumberland second set opener and you can tell the band is having a ball.
Besides The Closing of Winterland, The View From the Vault III is my favorite DVD.

This show really contains many aspects of what I love about the Grateful Dead. So lively and expressive!!!
The band is really playing at its peak on this one! Jerry is on fire and the bottom end is great for listening to Phil.
Altogether a great download!

I thought this was an incredible run. I, unlike most from California, love the venue. Great quality and a very kind Terrapin. I was fortunate enough to hit all but 1 run at Shoreline. I love the acoustics there. Always a great atmosphere. Worth the download.

My review is more about being at this show. "5 stars for the show", don't know the quality of this recording yet...
This night was my first time seeing the Dead in California. I had long awaited this event, and this show was even better than I could have wished for. The first set rocks, opening with an energetic and inspired Hey Pocky Way. Followed by a Minglewood that Bobby really puts everything into. His guitar work "shines" with Jerry just pushing him to his best. Then, a Candyman that is the best I've ever seen with a Jerry lead that is so 'distinctive' to this show, that I could always recognize it as the Oct 3, 1987 Candyman. Bird Song was also very special this night, people talked about it for a long time afterwards -really a great one. And, I think this was the last time the band played Esau.
Anyway, I could go on about every song for this show. The second set is equally as pleasing especially the Maggie's Farm>Cumberland opener. I listened to the tapes from these shows ever since I got my hands on them. Good Quality audience tapes came from this show because of the acoustics of Shoreline. (And there were "really good energies" at this show, very psychedelic.)
The whole band was "on" and played a very clean show this night. I think they were really happy to be playing in Bill Graham's Shoreline (hometown shows). The next night was also awesome.
BTW, if your interested The grateful Dead DVD "View From The Vault III" includes part of this night's first set as bonus footage on the disc (wish they had included the Bird Song and Music, :() Anyway, I hope this review is helpful and would love to hear anyone else's comments on this show.
