Not a 5 star, maybe Sub-4
Don’t get me wrong it’s not a bad show.
But it’s not a strong show for Jerry. Flubs entrance to Bertha to start. Not expecting perfection but whenever I hear that I am biased.
Bobby and Phil are very, strong drummers strong. Jerry is keeping up but I think he is a little off this night. Mix on Sirius has less Keith.
Sure there are some nice sequences but for 77 it’s not in my top 10. Flame away. Not every night is a 5 star, and an okay show this year is a great show in many others.

This is an amazing show. The energy is incredible throughout. I love the blistering NFA.
If only there were a better sounding recording of this one. It would be great if there turns out fo be a pristine recording in the Dead's vault, because this would make a great release.

Terrapin of the ages
What a kickass show!!! Just listen as Phil drops some badass bass bombs towards the end of Terrapin...But before that the song lady w/ a fan just flows and grooves so sweet so smooth...And lets not forget the sadly sweet Stella Blue so well done almost feel like your all alone in some blue light motel,,, only to be brought back to sunshine daydream bliss of Sugar Magnolia...over all this is one solid show well worth jamming to over and over till the cows come over!!!

GWIZ, this is proof, again, that a tape doesn't reveal the show. No way of telling from a tape how good the show may or may not have been. What I hope you meant to say was "this is a run of the mill '77 TAPE". This, my friends, was an absolutely beautiful show. A couple from Tyler, Texas (rose capital of the world) delivered 100 dozen roses to the band before the show. Roses were everywhere and the Boys were blown away. One of the best venues I ever saw the Dead in (180 shows over 25 years). Maybe 5,000 of us there. Oh, the days of maximum crowds of 4,500 or so. Moody, Soldiers and Sailors, The Fox (St. Louis and Atlanta; what? maybe 3,000?).............and my all time favorite Winterland! Never heard another Sugar Mag like the one this night. Anyway, this was one of my favorite shows I ever saw these guys play. I mean, come on, 100 dozen roses! How could it have missed!!!!!!!!!! Moral of the story; you can't judge a show by the tape (not that this tape's bad, even though the low end is lacking). You just CANNOT judge a show by the tape. Thanks for letting me share

The Hype
Can't get into it like all the other commenters seem to be. It's good, don't get me wrong, but the St. Stephen is okay to average. Much better versions out there. 3-stars because this is a run-of-the-mill '77 show.

One great under the radar show
I've loved this show since my earliest listening days (roughly the following year. Saturday Night Live. Remember that?)
This is one high energy, melodic, powerful show.
The second set is a thing of beauty. Strong playing. No wasted notes. Very melodic leads. The lead in Sunrise is perfect. Terrapin is beautiful. The jam in Stephen is beautiful. The jam in Truckin' is sublime. Sugar Mags starts with 3 full minutes of playing before Bob sings a note.
Even One MOre Sat Night goes out with a bang.
Can't say enough

Amazing 2nd set
Not the best SQ, but the performances more that make up for it imho. The 2nd set is just EPIC, featuring my favorite St. Steven and Stella Blue of 1977. Great NFA, Sugar Mag, Truckin' and Let it Grow from Set 1, too.
This St. Steve jam is especially wonderful; Garcia pulls out some of the most insane melodic phrases I've ever heard, a clear rival of 1-22-78.

An Old and Constant Friend
It is nice to finally retire my 1981 TDK cassette and listen to this. I'd rank this higher than even the shows in the May run. There is a swing and rocking drive that propels each song, including TLEO. Phil's bass lines in Bertha and the machine gun runs in Samson illustrate the tight connections with Bill and Mickey. The Let it Grows rocks steady.

tight performance, stellar NFA
love this show! It was my third. one of my all time favorites. St.Stephen>NFA is the best I've heard (both live and recorded) probably ever.
Oh and hey "Dino" from the infamous "DSO" why don't you use this review section to write a review of your own instead of trying to cover for your lame reputation.
Just say NO to DSO

This would be an excellent performance except for Donna. Her harmonies spoil every song that she forces herself into . . .
Without her, this is a 4 star performance
With her, I'm giving it 2 stars because I'm a softie

Thanks for the clarity Dino...it was obvious to most of us in the first place...besides, there's nothing Moody about '77, especially the quiet elegence of those October shows....highlighted again 29 glorious years later!
Rock on for DSO!

Just for clarification sake....
The person who posted as darkstar drummer above is not associated with DSO in any way except a listener. Neither Rob nor I would write anything along the lines of "Jerry's coke break during the drum intro was incredibly beneficial for his solo work."

Smoking St Stephen>NFA !!!
This has to be the best Stephen>NFA I've ever heard. The NFA is absolutely amazing....Jerry's coke break during the drum intro was incredibly beneficial for his solo work. It's Phenomenal! I would love to have seen the look on Jerry's face as he cruises through the jams like some divine angel of sound. Phil and the drummers are boomin' too. Anyway, it definitely rivals with the 10/11/77 NFA as one of the most profoundly intense and exploratory ever. (only too bad for the cut)
Stella Blue is particularly beautiful...especially Jerry's guitar work. The Truckin>Saturday Night encore is raging and seamless.
This IS the Dead at their peak, so do yourself a favor and download immediately...you will not regret!

St. Stephen >NFA>Stella Blue
I'm surprised that no one's mentioned the landing of NFA into Stella Blue. It has to be one of the smoothest laydowns of the year......
They Jam Hard in the middle of St. Stephen and carry it over to NFA, then just make a mellow dropoff into stella blue that will leave you speechless...
a nice show.

Special Stephen
It starts sluggish, and you almost want to forget about it. But patience pays. The jam begins around 5:15. At
5:37 or so, Jerry comes up with a compelling, new melodic new theme. It doesn't really go far, and fades. But at 6:45, he strikes his beautiful melodic diamond in the rough. He works it wonderfully til 7:26, and then its back to the last verse. This melodic workout is a precursor to the full-blow Ode To Joy he uncorks during 1-22-78, when we experience the second coming of Beethoven.
The Not Fade is energetic, and driven, but not quite the maniacal third eye romp that is 1-7-78.
The jam spins out and gets kind of quiet and contemplative after the nine minute mark, slowing the train into Stella. There is a short splice at around 7:40.
Magnolia starts off for a full
2:30 without any singing by Weir or any notes from Garcia, as if they were making a karaoke version. But again, patience pays. At
5:30 the jam begins, and Jerry has some good things to say, though the sound is slightly muddy. He moves to chords just after 7 minutes, and they bring it down at nearly 8. At that point, Weir greets the crowd I kid you not, then counts off into the finale. A fairly good rocker.
