One of the earliest and best shows I ever got on tape. The energy on Sampson is unparalleled to this day. Absolute smoker and very very unique show IMO!!! Thank you for sharing it!!!

St. Stephen 6.4 has it right that this recording is very bright and tinny but, if you have music editing software and throw a lot of bass and some reverb in the mix to tone down this "sweet spot" Front-Of-Board baby, the show is much easier on the ears. That said, when the show is dialed in correctly, the whole package is phenominal. The five stars is given only if you can soften up the treble.

kills it. absolutely obliterates it. 4:40 - 4:55 is straight up nasty, and the whole solo shows his musical ability in his "prime". Throughout 81-83 he uses the Jon Lord effect, with the heavy Overdrive. Sounds good. Warfield 1983-03-31 is very similar minus the amazing the scat. Sorry, don't mean to be a connoisseur of Roosters, but I loved it when he used to kick it into "Overdrive", and not just musically, but mentally, and physically. That guy could bring the fuckin' house down.

We pushed Cal's car through Lyndon Corners, Ken taped a deck to my leg under my skirt, and I danced my ass off. Nothing ever sounded so sweet. Later, we watched the Northern Lights from the carwash (no, really, it wasn't the dose), and Mom was amused when we showed up for coffee at daybreak.

My brother and I were in Brockport at the time and took a chance going to Syracuse without tickets. We bought two tickets outside and when we got to the gate the ticket taker told us one of the tickets was no good. He let us in anyway. The local radio station gave out stickers which I put on my guitar. I have that sticker to this day. Glad to be able to revisit a great show.

The first set is epic 81'. Goes on and on and the Alabama>Promised opener sets the pace. Just when you think Bobby is going to say "We'll be back in just a bit ya'all hang lose" they break out the China>Rider set closer. Love Brent's playing in this show. Classic Dead

I was 2 weeks past my 16th birthday. My first show. Alabama Getaway was the first song. It was not the best version, with Jerry forgetting the words midway, but it was jammed out real nice. I'll never forget when they came out of the gate with Alabama, catching the whole place off-guard. Even the tapers. 14 years later and 35 shows, I never caught that song again. Memories. Awesome. :)

I hadn't gone to the previous night so I can only say this: I just remember being behind the SB in the unofficial taping section & had brought my sister who was still in HS to her first show. Not sure she even to this day understands what it was all about. It was great show for me. That Lil Red Rooster kicks it....I feel like this is the point in history where Brent starts taking over that song....& making it his own. I love it!!! I also think my Audience Master sounds better than this one. I also just remembered stayin up all night in line waiting to get tickets in like January or february in Downtown Sybericuse & how cold it was.....I also think we had a late spring snow before the show...

Unfortunately, the previous night at Cornell gets all the attention. However, I enjoy listening to the first set of this show more than Cornell - way more. The band is on for the whole 13 song set, but particularly from Minglewood through the end of the set. Candyman, Looks Like Rain, Red Rooster (with Brent scatting), Railroad Blues and China/Rider are the best versions I have seen of the 100 or so shows attended. I remember being shocked when they played Railroad Blues so late in the set, and even further shocked when it didn't end the set, which was almost a full 90 minutes long. Sadly, the second set does not quite live up to the first set, and I am not even sure why - the song selection is good and played well, but something is missing. The sound is excellent. From what I recall the ceiling was very low in this venue and there was not alot of room for the sound, so it kind of came straight at you. This recording picks that up. And if you were the guy performing Karate moves on the folding seat next to me, you really freaked me out man.

The songs from The Other One to Satisfaction are one of my favorite power segments from the early '80s. It's incredibly energetic. Bobby is on absolute fire throughout. His vocal improv starts getting wacky during the chorus of Saint of Circumstance and culminating in Satisfaction when he riles up the crowd before they go home and throws in a few non sequitur ad libs: "You're gonna burn. You're gonna burn and you're gonna twist and you're gonna turn." What does he mean by that? During Satisfaction, he tells the crowd, "I need someone to help me now." And they start belting out the "I can't get no" lines like it's nobody's business.
I'd give it five stars for performance but the recording is pretty tinny, so that takes away a star.
