Wow! I don't follow the Dead and this was in fact the only show of theirs I ever saw. My mother took me. I can't believe after over thirty years of hanging onto the tape a friend made for me, a tape I was about to digitize, somebody told me about this being here. Amazing. I can't really comment on the quality of the set, since I'm not in the know, but I do remember the crowd being pretty excited about them starting with Casey Jones. My personal favorite here is Cassidy. Just love everything about the song-- the tune, the lyrics, the rhythm.

This was the day I fell off sugar mountain and it could not have been a better experience. The first set was in the sun and I could swear it was pouring during bobby's rain. The boys took the usual break and fired it up again at sunset and did a night set. Second set was not as inspired as the first but overall gear outdoor summer show.

This may have extra cassette generations in the mix here. So be forewarned.
Stupefying Althea, Scorching China>Rider, and hot Wang Dang Doodle. I really like the drummers interplay in 84 they were coming into a whole new groove for this year.
Check out 7-15-84, the sound quality is unreal and the show is legendary... for real.
also 3-31-84, 4-19-84, 4-26-84, 6-10-84, 5-7/8-84, 10-9-84, 6-27-84
I love 84

This first set was the first tape I ever owned, saw my first show in '86. I was amazed by it as a fifteen year old, and I still am at 39. Jerry's playing kept evolving into the early 80's, he's expressing himself with so much energy and brilliance. Find me a better first set, ever!

Casey Jones was a real rarity at this time. I always figured they pulled it out because a few night's before they had played at City Island in Harrisburg, just a stone's throw away from Merriweather. But then they trucked on up to Saratoga, played there and circled back. It must have been hell for those touring along. And that was their reward. The show is a dandy in my book for many of the reasons already listed. First set is rock solid and closes with Might As Well... a very underrated tune in my book.....They gave us a whipsaw, roller-coaster ride in the second set Wang-Dang-Stella -Round n-Round........
Stella was a highlight for me. Listen to soulful Jerry sing:
Ive stayed in every blue-light cheap hotel, cant win for trying.
Dust off those rusty strings just one more time,
Gonna make them shine.

This show was incredible! Not only the show but the whole scene outside the show. I brought a fruit salad to this show and we were in a pickup truck. On the way in we picked up some hitch hikers with guitars. Since the line was moving slowly to get into the parking lot, all of us jumped in the back of the pickup and I brought my fruit salad to get refreshed from the heat. After passing the bowl around the hitchers ended up camping with us. We had driven for hours. So we got right on setting up camp. But just as I started I felt the happiest most colorful feeling! I recognized it!! But in the past it had never been so clean and crisp! Wow! And then I heard one of the hitchers telling a friend that he had made sure that the strawberries in the salad were dosed with sunshine!! Well berries are my faves and I had a lot! We were running late and we crossed that wonderful bridge right into the show. Never got to settin up the tents! From the first song to the last, this was one clean, crisp, and bulbulous ride! What a time!! What an amazing show!! The next day I wondered if that show could possibly be as great as I thought?? Or it must have been the berries?? I spent the day meeting all kinds of people and it wasn't long till I knew... It wasn't in my head. That show was smokin!! And to the person that posted about the guy howling in the tree-- I remember him. The tree was next to a food stand and he was just above a picnic table!! That is tooooo funny!

Garcia sets China Cat Sunflower off on a pretty blistering pace. They did become so sluggish at the end of the 80s but this one still has spark and his voice still has some of that resonance, even if he was starting to forget the words here and there.
Trying to remember more about this show but past the casey it is still something of a distant blur

early showtime, 6pm.
i remember some sound/lighting problems at the beginning of the show - seemed like it took them awhile to get going, but once they did...i remember lots of energy coming from the stage that night. Bobby was his over-the-top usual self, esp toward the end on Good Lovin', but that's Bobby...it was one of the rockin-est versions of the tour, without a doubt.
you'll dig this show, if for no other reason than it's the first Casey to open a show in god knows how long. also, the Brent song "Don't Need Love" is a real pretty tune, tastefully done. the sound is especially good on this track.
Enjoy! and thanks to all those concerned for making this available on the net.

Somthing about each era of the Grateful Dead. Like a fine wine each time period has its own specialites. Different eras received more favorably than others by the populace of Dead Heads.
1984 definitely has it rough spots, however, the year does contain some ethereal moments. This first night at Merriweather Post and the following are some of the better sets of the year Both are a worthwhile listen.

Interesting side note about these shows....during the first set of the first night..the security was so laxed, you could jump the fence as many times as you needed to. We actually jumped the fence to get shit from the car and jumped right back in. I don't remember being blown away by the shows...but Casey Jones was a rare treat.
The second set of the next night had some cool highlights.

Heres the bottom line for me at least, as far as these off nights and breaks and what not. As I stated before in other reviews, Some of the worst nights in 83-84 are far better than most nights from the day Brent died, So say from that Ohio show that I went to in 1990 untill the end. Back then They were kicking ass night after night. On top of the partying they were doing. Of coarse there are some flubs or flat spots or whatever. Can you imagine goinout this weekend and seeing the dead play like they did from this period you would be blown out. you gotta be kiding me energy. what about the ice cream carasouel computerized dead there after. Hard core early to mid eighties even on a bad night still smoked.

I could not make it to this as I was out of the country however I did make it to both nights at Augusta and the second was really hot as was the first night of Providence. Kingswood may be the best of the year though... This is a great show for a number of reasons for starters everyone is on and '84 became a hit or miss proposition and increasingly frustrating the number of off nights they had - lets face it they are all fun but show up to play, the breaks got longer between sets and songs and the energy was not quite as palpable as it once was thats what makes this so special... casey jones opener for that year that was big stuff, FLS hot, might as well, china>rider these are all big Jerry 'I feel good'songs and he was on this night. Forget abt the crappy splice, I have a mint 1st gen Harrisburg and it was a crap show.

Be forewarned that the sound quality on this show is poor at best. The sourcing may be accurate, but if so, this is a god awful SBD recording.
Check out Weir's cryptic comment before Women are Smarter then stick around for the 17+ minute He's Gone. 84 is a quirky year, there are moments of blinding brilliance that rival anything they ever did, and (sadly) others you just cringe and wish never happened.
The show is a 4/5, but the sound quality, a 2/5 drops it in this reviewers mind to a neutral recommendation of 3.

This truly is a wonderful show, however I can only give it 4 stars and that is on rarity and collection qualities mostly. This show has a slightly better than mediocre to good sound quality, however, it is so well played and the rarity of casey Jones makes it very special as a collection item.
Not played again until 11.2.84, Casey Jones was not played prior to this night all the way back to 8.3.82 and only once before that and just 5 times in '81.
So opening a show with Casey is hot. This opener is so lengthy in its ending chorus that I really sense the enjoyment of the band. Great opener, great show, great band...heart of gold band...

After putting this show under the microscope it is clear to me that the band had the most fun they would have in the otherwise zoloft-infested year of 84. How many times in the early eighties did they start a show with Casey Jones..Never! And it is one boss version. I also cannot say enought about ALthea and Looks Like Rain which rank as two of the best versions of all time. The "Rain" is craftily weaved with beutiful Garcia lashings accompanied by nice interplay with Lesh. The second set really gets going during the end of He's Gone>Day Job...best Dont Need Love ever and a sweet Stella to melt your face off. This is a crispy board and one that drips with wired energy and authenticity. For anyone who appreciates pre-coma dead.
