Recorded with SoundForge. Burned to CD using CD Architect. The only editing was to remove approximately 4 minutes and 22 seconds of repeated material on the DAT during the banter between Top of the World and Cosmic Charlie. I also removed a couple of minor pops. Other than that, no editing was done. The breaks between each CD were breaks that were already present on the DAT. The only addition was 2 seconds of silence prior to the start of disc 3. More detail in the info file.

version and there are few things I like more than the Cryptical Reprise when they blow it out. But, it wasn't all that long or that bad. And it was perhaps better than Brent or Vince . . . . But, maybe they will be able to digitally edit her out someday-- the stuff is getting amazing. Made me think of the time I saw the Neville Bros. and this Bozo in front of me decides to sing Amazing Grace along with Aaron. I had less than holy thoughts going through my head. But, this show is totally phenomenal-- just killer, killer stuff and great fidelity. It doesn't get much better as far as I am concerned.

I highly recommend adding this show to your 1970 GRATEFUL DEAD collection. The "Original" GRATEFUL DEAD. If you weren't alive in 1970 you can't imagine it. California had the best schools in the country in 1970...now they have the worst...ah, progress. I recommend using your EQ during playback of most of the shows on the IA, this one included. Windows Media Player has a 10 band EQ and SRS WOW effects that enhance the sound. Here's one way to stream/dowload this show: The IA recommends users of Windows XP view this web-page with RealPlayer. 6/7/70 so sweet -- not anywhere near a "best" 70 show - way too much base -- and I cant give it a five - but JG's voice is on and they all seem to be

into it --- if not totally in sync -- some tape issues -- but really fun to hear... smiles burst from sets like this one - the banter on stage is so much memory making goodness, it jams...great bass Listening for the new speedway - and the whole acoustic thing is just the bomb. No doubt why we love the dead after this one. Yeah, i'll give it a five (can't give a 4.9999) -- cumberland acoustic JAMS but gets way cut up...oh well - after comes a very sweet Uncle then onto the passion of new speedway and on into the Other One -- wooooosh Yeah 4 b/c of the base...but 5 for everything else...

While memories of this and the half dozen other 1970 evenings I spent with the Dead are fading fast, by the mid-70s I was certain that the summer Filllmore
...
West shows were among my favorites attended in that year or any other. Unlike a lot of places that were used for live concerts, the Carousel was actually built (in the swing era) for sound. The 1970 shows, as is so often said about Dead shows in general, were ones you had to be there to fully appreciate. This is a wonderful show not so much for being one of the best recordings extant from that year, but mainly for how well the band worked the acoustics of the venue and the overall intimacy of the Carousel Ballroom (FW). The place had good vibes and they (and everyone else) seemed to really enjoy themselves there. Of the various Bay Area venues over the years I experienced them in a live setting, I preferred this one over Winterland, Harding Theater, Berkeley Community Theatre, Berkeley Greek, Cow Palace, Kezar, the park and certainly the Oakland Coliseum.
To get a sense of how good they were live in 1970, the New York shows are far better recordings but the Carousel was relaxed, like home. No one minded a few flubs, when the show overall was as good as this one. Jerry was in his element playing all 3 sets, literally sitting in for the mid-set with NRPS while sitting on the pedal steel as a side man (though out front center stage) I think this is the week where the oft-used expression, "an Evening with the Grateful Dead" was born. Thanks to the archive we can enjoy memorable moments such as when Bob Weir went something like - "Who is that guy?" to a hipster in the crowd requesting an obscure number... "You're always requesting 'Golden Road'... and we don't know how that goes anymore..." I thought the dude either asked for "Quadlibet For Tenderfeet" or, "Whatever Became Of The Baby"... actually, someone yelled out for "White Rabbit" or maybe it was "Louie Louie"! Whoever he was, he probably made oddball requests on more than one occasion. This time the lights went up for a sec and he was caught in the act!

decade makin it up for you!!! the main ten sounds a lot like playin sneaky, listening to this show is like being prevy to the song writing and prefecting your fly on the wall, some of what makes the dead music off the charts. agree?

The That's It suite smokes as always. The Cryptical reprise segues into the first-ever Sugar Magnolia, which is quite rough but interesting to hear at a slower tempo. However, the Good lovin>drums>Good lovin' is fabulous; layer upon layer of melodic improvisation is foisted upon the listener. That segment would be worth the download alone.
