I was also there, seeing the Dead for my second time at the ripe old age of 15, with bewildered girlfriend in tow. It was indeed a blistering hot day,

with plenty of people desperately soaking their heads in wet towels, and not a few young hippie women joining their male counterparts in seeking respite by doffing their tops. But my memory (which is generally spot-on, even for things that happened 40 years ago) doesn't jibe exactly with what is presented here. In particular, I have a distinct recollection that there were THREE sets, with the show beginning at 2:00, the final set opening with Truckin', and the crowd finally heading home at 7:20. If you consider the timing, the first 17 songs add up to almost 2 hours of music -- and that doesn't include the usual tuning and banter between songs. I just don't think it's plausible that they were on stage for two-and-a-half uninterrupted hours in that heat. My memory is of two somewhat modest sets, followed by the blockbuster finale. This memory is actually corroborated by the 7/17/72 article in the Hartford Courant the next day (you can find this on FB) which noted that the band took "short breaks" (not "break") and "opened the third part of their performance with Truckin'." As this is the only archived version of this concert, and other accounts like setlist.com omit a couple of titles (mainly Casey Jones, which they definitely played), I think it's entirely possible that the official record of this show is still in for a little tweaking. Oh, and one more memory: there was considerable buzz among the crowd that members of the Allman Brothers were hanging around and getting ready to jump the stage. That was all pretty far out.

into town along with hundreds of other cars following each other around in circles everyone stoned,looking for the venue. No GPS in those days. We just followed the smiles and Dead stickers to the show. We were everywhere! The feeling of belonging and being part of that inexplicable something was overwhelming. I can still see a bus pulling up with the band and people chucking water balloons at it. The gates opened and the cowboy noises head em up move em out. Lots of hoots and whistles and mooos. Good times, fun times, youth. It was hot that day, really hot and we were up close in the middle with a knot of people from home. I remember the tie dye speakers, taking pictures with my 35 mm camera. I did some acid and between the heat and the crush of the crowd I had to retreat to the stands at some point. The music was a blur, a sea of heads moving to the rhythm. It was the beginning of a wonderful 20 year adventure that never failed to amuse, inspire and free my soul. Being as one with thousands of like minded people is like nothing else I have ever found. Pure joy. :)

stampeded 5 rows right in front of the stage without having to show a ticket. Could only stay there for a short time before retreating into the stands. It was dangerously hot. Don’t recall much of the show, but it was probably my least favorite of the 25 or so that I attended. Too hot to be outside in a crowd.
I remember before they started Jerry saying “pray for Pigpen, he’s really sick, man” and also The fire Department spraying the crowd Down and passing people who had to get out of there over head to get them out. I Also remember a funny older guy hawking ice cream while we were sitting waiting for the gates to open saying cmon kids, help me get rid of this garbage. I also remember a group from Philly in front of the stage with a pretzel flag on a Long, long stick.
Funny what you remember after 48 years.

My second dead show. What a blast it was. Someone (Weir I think) announced at the start that Pig Pen was not well and was back in CA recovering -- understatement

of the year. Dillion stadium was more like a high school football field with bleachers at that time. Not a bad seat in the house.
The soundboard tracks are good quality with a few blemishes. The Aud recording tracks are low quality but still much appreciated for the memories. The band was stoked. Jerry ripping out leads like a madman -- check out Cumberland Blues. Jams with the Allmans at the end are great.
Dying to hear the full soundboard. Whoever is hoarding it, please please post it.

Gotta say: I *love love love* the sound of the audience recording that makes up part of this file.
This taper might not have had the greatest equipment ... but he found a very sweet spot in the venue and listening to this recording nearly 45 years later (!) I can feel myself there, disintegrating into vibrating molecules. The Dead had a darn nice sound system in 1972 and this awesome Playin in the Band is your proof.
Just the right amount of crowd ambience, too. People are having a real good time.
Nobody likes a heat stroke but warm weather makes it easier rock and roll. The band was definitely in a groove here. Stella Blue sounds like it was written and performed in a different universe from the rest of the show. How did they do that?? There is a strong argument to made that this performance of Cumberland Blues is the "best" one. This early version of Mississippi 1/2 Step is very tightly arranged, even if Jerry still isn't complete sure about the lyrics ...
Minimal attempts are made to "harmonize" the multi-vocal parts, at least according to the usual Earth standards. Sincerity and earnestness above all.
Here's looking forward to an upload of the rest of the audience recording ... and will someone find the rest of the soundboard?

I remember this show very well, the Jam with the Allman Brothers was on of the highlights... but one of the main things I remember about this show was

was how hot it was... I also seem to remember the Hartford Fire Department opening up a hydrant and spraying into the air to cool us down... parts of this show are a little foggy, but I guess that is to be expected... my rating is based on being at the show, not the recording
also, I maybe wrong, but didn't Bobby come on stage before the show with a dog(s) someone had left in a car... (Bobby had broken the windows out of the car and rescued the dog)

Only one third of this is audience, but the rest is decent sounding. Good to have what's here! Casey Jones and Ramble On Rose are quite good, for example.

I was working at a Jewish summer camp in Palmer, MA when I attended this concert. A carload of observant Jews barreling down the Mass Pike and the interstates

at 50 mph in a 3 o the tree old Ford woodie arrived early at the stadium and stood practically under the stage. I have pictures of the concert I would upload if I could. Before the concert started there was a problem with the piano and a tuner had to fix it. What a hot day! What a great concert. What an amazing crowd. The Allman brothers as a bonus. The stars are for the music, the ambiance, the memories— not the recording quality. I will keep searching for a better recording, but as someone who grew up listening to AM transistor radios, this is just fine.

I’ve gotten very spoiled by the soundboard recordings that permeate this site, and as a result often ignore audience recordings (much to my detriment,
...
I am sure). But today I put my headphones on at work and was just too lazy to change to a different show, and I am very thankful I didn’t. Admittedly, the sound is a little rough, but you get used to it, and the audience recording has a wonderful texture to it that the soundboard shows just can’t capture. Just feels like one of those good time, outdoor, casual, hot summer day kind of shows. Nothing that blows you away, but everything very solid and genuine.
Can’t say 5 stars because, well, it just isn’t a 5 star show, but 3 seems unfair. Just some good old fashioned Grateful Dead.

The first 8 songs are audience quality recordings. They are kinda hard to listen to if not for the incredible ... performances.
Can you imagine all it took to get the DEAD on stage and stuff and then one button isn't pushed and all we get is a crappy recording from the audience...man.
From "Mexicali Blues" to almost the end of "Me and My Uncle" it's SOUNDBOARD quality.
"Mississippi Half Step" and "Sing Me Back Home" are audience quality recordings.
From "Casey Jones" to Johnny B. Goode the audio quality is Soundboard. There's some audio stuff happening during Sugar Magnolia, beware.
The GRATEFUL DEAD have to prove they can still rock n roll without Pigpen. They haven't left the R&B stuff behind yet. "Hey Bo Diddley" is a real treat.

a while. People were turning into lizards...Found my way up to the front on Jerry's side and started to feel much better because I could hear them much better and someone offered me a nice cold one...From that point on BLISS...great to have it available. Remember The Allmans jamming at the end of the show, but according to thoewerethedays they played a few hours by themselves. This I do not remember at all. I think he may be mistaken. Then again after 43 years my memory is a little fuzzy.

a big Allman Bros. fan (been to many shows), and sort of a medium Dead fan at this point. After this show, I loved them both.
The next show I would attend would be Watkins Glen the following summer, at which point you could say I became a fully-fledged Deadhead. In fact, I can pinpoint the exact moment - it was the Friday night soundcheck when they played Sugaree - I can remember it like it was, like it was... well, like it was 33 years ago :-)
Anyway, this show was a big eye-opener and mind-opener for me. When the ABB guys came on with the Dead, it was really e-fucking-lectric. I'm listening to NFA-GDTRFB right now. Yow! Pretty snappy! Ol' Berry Oakley was crankin' away - good thing I really like bass!

I was at this show -- open air track stadium -- cops walking the circle with GD t-shirts on, waving to the stoners -- orange-barrel sunshine!! -- Dead

played a few hours, then the Allman Bros played a few hours, then they jammed together. A truly great show. The sound onsite was a lot better than we hear here...so, 4 stars for quality, 5 stars for show

The quality of this show is marginal with a large portion being a barely passable audience. The board section is also a bit hissy.
My advice is get the ... Jam with the Allmans. This is a hot jam and there are very few versions of Bo Diddley available.
