10/27 show notwithstanding). It certainly sounds like it on this night. As I mentioned in the review of the following night at the Kiel, this show shouldn't be entirely overlooked, despite it playing second fiddle compared to sister shows that were played during this period. For 1973 standards--and those standards are way high, folks--the first set is positively underwhelming. The “Truckin'” in the second set features an interesting jazz infused outro, if only because of the McCoy Tyner-esque inspired chordal structures laid down by Bobby beneath Keith's jangling ivories. The “Other One” offers little reward considering the time it allots, but again Bobby and Keith are the ones that shine on this number (this in and of itself, is rather telling). That said, there is a true nugget that boys pulled out of their hats that night: Eyes Of The World. It's truly a shining star out of an otherwise very overcast sky. It's as if out of nowhere the boys get their thing together and decided to play. And play they do! Everything down to the last note of the minor arpeggio jam is executed with profound precision and inspiration. It's truly one of the best Eyes of the year (or ever), and I suspect it would be highly praised if it were not for the fact that it was played in a show that reeks of mediocrity, and one that many people seemingly overlook altogether. This rendition is 1973 textbook bliss at is best, and should be transcribed to sheet music for the ages to marvel at and relish in. If one is looking for an all around great show for this month in 1973, look to 10/19 and 10/25. Of course, things would only get better next month with monsters like 11/10, 11/11, 11/14, 11/17 & 11/30, but let's not get ahead of ourselves here....

whole rest of the first set is pretty great. The second set starts strong and keeps with it! Phil and Keith do a great job bringing the jazz in with some great jams during Truckin' as well as the rest of the set. Jerry tears up every solo he gets throughout the whole show, certainly a great night for him. Every song is fantastic and it's a great recording.

that there's highlight after highlight from each band member. The honky-tonk first set has some surprise standouts, like a hot-n-raunchy Tennessee Jed and the Mexicali, which is a wild rolling polka where I swear Jerry makes his guitar sound like a tuba in places. Then the frolicsome, high-energy St. Louis saloon opens up into a place of growing intensity with a stunning Eyes, a you-can-hear-a-pin-drop China Doll, a laser-focused Loser (with everyone's contribution so clear and lovely), a happy-dance Big River, a haunting Brokedown, a jazz-Philled Truckin' and a TOO that pours its light into ashes … chaos theory in action, Dead style, where all graceful instruments are known. Great stuff in a great year.
This gets somewhat overshadowed by the night after, but it shouldn't be. There is a mountain of energy here (much more than 10/30) and some rather unique

playing by Jerry that make this show very worth having. Not to mention the Other One is totally relentless, and Eyes of the World is one of the best ever. Mind-melting post song jam - Phil's booming transition into China Doll is one of a kind.

I remembered why I loved that tape so much. This is definitely the Dead at their peek of musicality. A wonderful recording as well! The bass and keyboards are fantastic.

being an aud. recording, would love to know if a sbd exists. Heard this one on the Deadpod (thanks Professor) and just had to download it. If you don't get around to listening to this whole show at least check out the Bertha, Truckin' and Brokedown Palace. Good, good times.
