So this is your basic 80's show with some outstanding moments in the second set after a pretty blase first. China>Rider is typically hot, Playin' is 80's-short before an average Uncle Johns. There's a nice little trailer jam out of Uncle Johns' going into Drums, which starts with a lovely talking drum jam. The Other One is the really outstanding part of this show, with Phil raising the creative tension level with his bass bombs and holding the low C to create some dissonances highlighted explicitly by the keys. It's a solid Wharf Rat followed by a typical pro-forma NFA (don't let the length fool you; most of it is the chant). Foolish Heart for the encore, with midi-flute and a lovely ending, is a nice bonus.

A better first set would have given this show 4 stars. The second is definitely at that level, with the Other One approaching 5 stars.

Wonderful Healy Matrix Soundboard recording...one of the best in the Archive. Please listen to this! One of the best Other Ones I have heard, IMHO. Very good overall performance from the Boys. I originally heard an Aud recording from my buddy right after it happened, and I just listened to it again 20 years later...I am still amazed at this show!

did not make this show but been to the Greek Theatre - this being the last show there its interesting that it was such a good one

the place is seriously charged: you can feel it in the woods and grounds

the actual site was an Ohlone Indian pit ; the Ohlones practiced shamanism and beleived in the countering spirits of the coyote trickster and the benevolent hummingbird

the man who built the Greek was a classicist from Cornell, moved West from the East

Teddy 'Roosevelt' (red or rose world/earth - GD rose symbolism) was the first guest at the newly built theater - teddy seriously into Western man's expansion, Western man renovating almost every important indian and pre-indian mound, pit, burial site, to erase an ancient history/consciousness and ready it for New World expansion

what did they build over this ancient site of worship, a faux history, a simulacrum of ancient greece, a greek theater, greek theater a form of civil worship and bonding, a medium for mass psychology a la today's tv soap operas and dramas (re-introduced enmasse by Freud) repeating the same themes of violence and adultery and the law ad hominum - a state of modern psychic hoodoo

were the shows at the greek part of or undercutting this simulacrum?

was the audience subject of the New Rose-Red World/Earth or tapping into a terrestrial spirit-archetype left-over from the shamanic visions of the ancient Ohlone : the original 'red' man on the red earth

are the New Rose-Worlders like the coyote trickster and intentionally building their ceremonial and recreational venues over ancient magical sites, using these terrestrial energy fields and re or even mis-directing them, modern man fueled by this cosmic spirit but unconscious of its original source and intent, unconscious of the ancient archetypes and a deeper reality?

were the Dead tricksters, hummingbirds...both?

it would be interesting to study really jamming GD shows and their venues and see if there is a statistical correlation between charged shows and ancient sites once lived and worshipped on by ancient man

This show just cooks from the first chords to the last. Don't pick around---just swallow whole. Just perfect!!! 89-90 is such a beautifully refined era for the Dead--I am left speechless so many times over. Once the MIDI effects got rolling--the music could just go from just crisp,liquid, light and then just spiral and bank into some complicated, lost in a labyrinth, alien, dark asteroid field of a jam---beautiful!! Both sets are freakin' powerhouses. Have fun!

The greek theater is such a great, intimate venue, and it's natural setting carved into the hill provides for some surprisingly good acoustics. However, the backstage area is a huge curved concrete wall, not conducive to hearing the band very well. Am I complaining about backstage passes? Hell no! I was lucky enough to have a friend who was, believe or not, buddies with John Cutler by way of ham radio. Anyway, it didn't take long to realize that this show was gonna cook, so we squeezed in up front.

Had a chance to talk with Mickey before the show... damn, that guy never stops "drumming" with his fingers. I had met him previously because he signed his then young son Taro up for a youth club where I worked. I still remember it like it was yesterday... I was getting ready to go to lunch when a knock on my office door irritates me (I was hungry!). I open it up expecting another mom wanting to sign-up or ask 20 questions, etc. Instead, I was face to face with Mickey. Now I'm not some star-struck groupie type, but I have to say it was a most serendipitous encounter. The funny thing was, kids had to be six yrs old to sign-up, yet at the time Taro was like 5.9766 yrs old or something. A wink and a nod later, he was 6! I think it's cool that the band members were just regular people. I imagine most rock stars would have sent a nanny to sign the kid up.

I loved this last show at the greek.

it's been stated already, but this other one is possibly my favorite since Dead performance. Starts with the double-Phil intro, and cooks throughout, but what makes it quintessential is the last jam, post 2nd verse.

Check it out ...each guys seems to take turns pushing it higher...awesome, unexpected stuff. If I had to choose just one song to explain what the Dead meant to me, it would be this one. And luckily, I was there too.

Really well played show with an incredible China -> Rider, Jer is really on it! Nice sound too.

I was inline skating on the beach here in Santa Monica, heading towards Malibu, during the OO. Right on the trippy vocals (i.e., smiling on a cloudy day)they do some trippy vocal effects. They ran Bobby's vocals through an octave effect and then through some vibration/phaser sounding effect/program so you get both his normal voice and then a whole seperate effect that accents "melting into the pudding" sound. Made me jump when I heard it. They didn't do this enough.

Glad I got this show. I was surprised at how good the first set was. Jerry's doing good and remembers his lines! "We want Phil!" ok, Box of Rain to close the first set! Second set is a monster, opening with a nice china rider. Do I even need to mention the Other One? Foolish Heart encore? Hey, it works.
The sound quality on this matrix is top notch.
I love getting 2 disc shows that rock like this.

I saw 191 shows between 1985 and 1995. This is at least in the top three - maybe the best? Excellent 1st set followed by a sublime pre-drums. Had to go walk off the BUZZ during the Playin>Jam - (aaaaahhhhh, summertime in California:^) - hit my seat right as UJB was staring up - some of the most fluid Grateful Dead ever! The Other One out of Space was the best performance of any one song that I ever witnessed. Incredibly powerful! I will swear, at one point everyone in the Greek was screaming uncontrollably. The remainder of the set was just quintessential Grateful Dead. "It's not what they play, it's how they play it." Download this one - you can't go wrong. Fine example of 1989 ... The Golden Age!

If you want to let people know there is more to the Dead than pretty folk tunes, put this one on for them. I would have loved to been in the crowd at this one on a few tabs. WOW! They tease so badly in this show and rock the other half immensely. I can't get tired of this one. Also one of the best Wharf Rats of all time in my book. Pick this one up for sure!

The last Greek Theater show, and a fitting end. The Other One is just TREMENDOUS. Not perfectly played, not seemless, but OMG, it is one **powerful** piece of music. The Other One starts building from Space. The whole band is in The Zone, especially Phil and Jerry, who are just tearing it up. Things are off-kilter and spacey, but the real fireworks begin after the last lyrics. Tension...tension...tension...more tension...More Tension...MORE TENSION...holding, building, holding, building...and then ECSTATIC, CLIMACTIC RELEASE! I hate to use that cliched "aural orgasm" reference, but it has never been more appropriate than for the conclusion to this Other One. Perhaps the best Other One of the "modern era," and certainly the best I ever experienced live.

the energy right after the line,
"on a North bound train," is out of this world the drumming is tight and extended.

by the time i got to this show i had a plane ticket back to philly and a dead ticket to the greek, after finally acheiving a tour i was very happy to get home, this show was the icing on the cake,no bust outs but it rocked!
there is something about this venue, i think its the stone and the thrones that were the coolest
i cant thank julian enough for his hospitality that week!

Among the best versions of The Other One played that year. Great extended jam after the second verse. I remember reading a Jerry interview the week before the Hampton shows where he said this and the 10-1-89 were the best shows they had played in recent memory

This turned out to be the Dead's final show at the Greek and the best of the 3 day run.
It's a rock solid show from start to finish, especially the entire 2nd set. Thanks to an excellent fm broadcast, high quality recordings are in wide circulation.
This was a fun show to attend. Glad I made it.

Outstanding! This sounds like a Healy mix - it's phenomenal in its clarity, sound field, and balance. Last show ever at the Greek for the Grateful Dead, ending an excellent 3-day run. The Chinacat->Rider->Playin->Uncle John's is top shelf! The devolution from UJB into a Playin' Jam into space is way above average, and the keyboard and Beam sounds are as good as it ever gets! Very inspired segment.
