Almost sure that's Paul Butterfield on harp and vocals... what an incredible combo! Sounds like how the Butterfield Blues band played it on the first record sort of. It's definitely not Pigpen on harp because Paul provides some rhythm during Jerry's solo, and Pigpen never does that. It has some of that classic Butterfield grit. Great show all around, though quality could have been better. But who cares! It's pure bliss.

The quality as some have said, is not best, but typical of taping from back then, but energy is there and there's exceptional versions of many early Dead. There is actually a version of MAMU that I actually think is great! Just go with it and enjoy what to me at least is primal Dead, garage band de-luxe.

While they're still very much in fledgling state, turn up the volume & listen to how well they already had control over their sound. The Death Don't in particular goes from whisper quiet to earth shakingly loud in all the right places. What a band! Enough of this is awesome to take 5.

I stood outside of the Matrix, on a School Night and had to listen to the sounds from afar. Had to leave early (school), and couldn't go in (a few years too young).
I used to go the the Fillmore Sunday's shows - 1 pm for something like $2, but the Matrix was more 'adult', so I had to go. Both venues were within walking distance, though I had to huff up the hills from the Matrix to where I could catch a bus to my house in the Haight.
There was another concert at the Avalon that was "adults only", and I had to hang outside once again. I heard there were strippers, but - obviously - can't say anything more than that was the rumor.

The Grateful Dead had quite a bit of blues phrasing back then; I fell in love with Pig Pen's playing (I also was a huge fan of Paul Butterfield's Blues Band).

So few, almost no other I've ever heard, recordings of "Alice D. Millionaire." Any ideas where else I can hear my song about Owsley? Love the Pigpen on hear, but there has to be another recording besides '66-right?

Great show! Early Dead bluesy era is always nice -- Pigpen kept the boys tight and full of soul! Jerry's got a nice pop to his guitar, and the rest of the band is smoking. Listen to them come into Me & My Uncle on the second try, wow. Show is excellent start to finish.

Too bad the recording isn't top rate. 4/5

An excellent well played and varied set list from the garage band days of the Dead. Well worth listening to but the sound leaves something to be desired.

This is some real power electric blues. Try not to be distracted by the sound quality and get into the raw energy of the playing. Really hard to believe the Dead had so much energy to burn at this stage of their reign. Hey, I like the 70's and all, but to hear this, I mean really listen to it, really blows your mind what they were doing. Jerry and Pig's raucous playing and the wild vocals by all are just awesome.

A lower-gen recording of the Viola Lee from this show is masquerading as the first song from 3.12.66 (i.e. the one in the three song version on disc 1 of the 1.8.66 Acid test set)

Therefore, the version of Viola Lee that appears under 3.12.66 on the archive in Disc 5 of this set probably was played on 3.12.66 (if any of the expanded edition is really from the Pico test

So if you want to hear the bottom end of the Viola Lee from this show, get the "abbreviated" 3.12.66. It has much more bottom compared to this comparatively thin-sounding recording here.

I can almost imagine them in the RayBan Wayfarers and the speed they were all jacked up when they made this stuff - It sounds more like the Animals than the Dead. Sound quality is not that great but this is great stuff for nostalgia and background music.

track 20 is called "Deep Elem Blues"(it's an old blues song), it is written wrong above. Deep Elem is an area of dallas that was full of live music venues and brothels in the 20's-30's. The live music venues and bars stayed but the brothels are now gone.

I believe that the harmonica player on Yonder's Wall is Paul Butterfield. He does this song on his first album. This is really hot. The rest of the show is just as hot.

Excellent. It has the classic mid-60s dead sound. The sound quality could be better, but it aint bad; it goes with the era.
