the feeling on this rich, blue-hot hornsby one is that of exquisite elegance in that puffed-up mindless sense

bill and mick dip their toes into a dozen things, keeping their turntablism abreast of the breathing tree of life. Sensational stuff. Continued

Strap on the goggles and microscopes to find traces of this in jerry's playing as soon as the intro dies down into a no nonsense sparkplug wheel

Dark Star
Sept. 10, 1991
Madison Square Garden

Makes nassau 90 seem like a warm up, this one is mythically punishing. Starts speedy and just when estimated is really gelling. Seas of tasteful dance hall bliss, sharp jolts of midi and kaleidoscopic melodic ambient. Marsalis soars, you're filled with the rosy warmth of a dock-side sunset, garcia starts the dissonance and toggles it powerfully with phil, euphoric devils busting out of the envelope constantly evolving. Pre-drums duet theme reprise
Estimated Prophet
Sept. 10, 1991
Madison Square Garden

the show does NOT miss, not just another pre-drums EP - waves of torrential righteous psychedelia before the jam, everyone unravels into nooks and crannies. Massive soprano-led jam, hornsby gets greasy and the boys lay down a desert-hot mirage of funky backing.
Deal
Sept. 10, 1991
Madison Square Garden

triumphant one, bruce galvanizes everything... brimming with effusive dragon chasing totality, no options. Branford comes alive
Cassidy
Sept. 10, 1991
Madison Square Garden

perfect call, another weir tune that floats with the grace of scattering flocks through this perfect first set, everyone going nuts, invigorated with nourishing streams of midi jams, phil comes alive on this one too driving the devils to punk it up
High Time
Sept. 10, 1991
Madison Square Garden

Barricade storming Black throated finish into another primo roadworn ballad, beast mode 8-piece immediately turning MSG into a bar with august west types. Devils deserve credit for sparking the first set with ample layered mischief. Listen for hornsby and marsalis crunching this one to shreds with their creative dynamism. Plink warrior's delight of rolling fat blunts of kush in Bryant Park in the middle of the day stopping at a deli for coffee and bagels etc. Impossible not to swoon for jerry's wrenching performance on this one, sensitively attentive and always theatrically robust. an essential version to add to your list for time or song
