Shoreline Amphitheatre

You know the crew is feeling spritely and in a cowboy mood when they play this, blessed frequently in '89 with it.

Sweet, sweet, down-home and yokey Jerry.

The Same Thing

Buckeye Lake Music Center

Pigpen cut revived for the 90's with the group in kind of a slow crawling king snake vibe. Vince knows how to lay down some organ. Top late form.

Premiere of this stately Jerry ballad.

Uncle John's Band
July 17, 1989
Alpine Valley Music Theatre

Explosive. Not the first thing you think of when you think of this tune, but the D minor 7/4 jam section in this version has some gnarled, menacing soloing that takes you on a dark and stormy ride before welcoming you back into the blissful, baby-boomer utopia of the chorus. Fantastic version. Crystalline clip here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n4-_V__GUro Every version on this 3 run alpine valley run is just fackin' mythical, witchical, mate.
He's Gone
Sept. 3, 1977
Raceway Park

Very strange He's Gone that starts off on a slightly uneasy tone as some sort of rollicking slow double-time thing. As it evolves though the band gets very passionate. Just another thing that makes 9/3/77 a very special gig.

Concertgebouw

For me you just cant beat this Europe 72 LP version of He's GOne, even though the tape is so sped up that the key is raised by nearly a half-step. It adds a certain vintage charm to it. This is one of my favorite Dead tracks.
China Cat Sunflower -> I Know You Rider
June 26, 1974
Providence Civic Center

Euphoric china rider. That moment when the mythical "feeling groovy jam" is true happiness and you truly get the sense that the boys only played this segment when they were really on fire.
Playin' In The Band
Nov. 17, 1973
Pauley Pavilion - University of California

Iconic pitb, a palindrome with ujb and morning dew, then back again! Crystal-clear run of the material with an iconic "donna wail", heady relics, all! Polar plunge into pulsating, intuitive ascension.
