Not Fade Away
July 25, 1972
Paramount Theater
For a show that sometimes lacks a little energy in places, they end it with quite a bang. This outro is exceptionally good.

Truckin'

Slow star builds up huge head of steam and a slamin' jam. Ends funny, unsure whether >He's Gone or something else. Nice version, overlooked show.

Not too polished yet, but full of that new-song exhuberence. Great key work from Keith, and a funforall Reeeee-o Grand outro.

Playin' In The Band

A thing of (overlooked) beauty. Tight, muscular and coherent. It never drags. A perfect '72 Playin' here.

Crazy Fingers

Bob Weir's Studio
You've never heard it like this: Rehearsal tape, listed as "Distorto". Track 2. An absolute treasure. Hard-freaking-core. No words, just rock.

Jack Straw

Easttown Theatre
Massive energy in these early Kieth shows. I dig both Detroit shows: both quite hot.
Not Fade Away

...and Jerry goes full Rock God on us around 6:10 in. Honestly, this one captures the weirdly intense, almost menacing vibe to the whole show. Everything is uptempo and just notched up a bit on the aggressive meter. Lots of banter with heckler/rowdy fans. But here they cut loose at the accelerated pace and smooth everything out just beautifully. Great GDTRFB, too.
Playin' In The Band
Oct. 23, 1971
Easttown Theatre
Really folks, listen to it. It bites down hard and shreds. '71 is the pivotal year for Playin' and this one has all the elements, sounding like The Main Ten in places, a country ballad in others, and an acid bath in still others. Don't expect '72 levels of space-exploration, that won't come for another eight months or so, but this one's a killer with some strong medicine in her. The rowdy crowd (Detroit, uh-huh) seems to feed off of it.

And that, lads and lasses, is why I listen to the Dead. Play it over my tombstone please!
Bird Song
March 9, 1981
Madison Square Garden
Like floating on a bubble. Jerry's ideas tumble over the edge and spill back up to the top of the swirl. Iridescent liquid poetry, everyone's fully plugged into it.
