Wharf Rat
Oct. 16, 1974
Winterland Arena

Coming out of a 48 min jam to open the set, this one is like a small visitation before another huge jam>Eyes. A big epic indeed.

Playin' In The Band
Sept. 21, 1974
Palais Des Sports

Overlooked space-jazz masterwork. Mercurial and vast. Listen to it as the outcome of the Space before it and BANG! you're on a deep ride furthur.

Space

Palais Des Sports

10mins of absolute weirdness. Incorrectly listed as Seastones - but Jerry, Keith and Billy are there with Phil and Ned. An outrageous corker. Scary.

Bertha
Sept. 21, 1974
Palais Des Sports

Show opener with mix off: not perfect but interesting to hear Phil/Bobby interplay (almost exclusively), which is rare for '74 recordings.

China Cat Sunflower -> I Know You Rider
Nov. 19, 1972
Hofheinz Pavilion

Uncategorizably brilliant transition jam. Sweet sweet Rider. Overshadowed by the immortal PITB that follows. Give a spin, it won't disappoint.

Bird Song
April 29, 1971
Fillmore East

Played a full step lower than in later years.
Hard to Handle

Fillmore East

Jerry soloing behind Pig's lead here (and elsewhere) is too hot. Get's the sap running.
Sugaree
Oct. 17, 1983
Olympic Center

This is a perfect version: Energetic, but not cokey, clear vocals, and soaring, driven, take-control solos. I'll take this ride anytime.
Turn On Your Love Light
Aug. 6, 1971
Hollywood Palladium

Great vintage dead. Everyone was on for the show and Pig was blazing from beginning to end. Think I'll (a year later) add that around 18:00 they get into some very cool melodic inventions. Nice nice nice.
El Paso
Aug. 6, 1971
Hollywood Palladium

Would love to hear it, but the versions of this date on the Archive with El Paso seem to be DPs, not-for-streaming. Any ideas why the different songlists for this great date?
