China Cat Sunflower -> I Know You Rider
Oct. 17, 1972
Fox Theatre

Unique transition jam with a two-chord quarter-note striking pattern before IKYR. Band hits its stride in the set here.

Sugaree

Smooth as liquid smoke. Beautiful recording and great show, complete with weirdness from Grace Slick. A few tape glitches, but worth it.

Friend of the Devil

Winterland Arena

Hometown benefit show with a nostalgic feel for the '70 sound that just smokes here.

Greatest Story Ever Told

Springfield Civic Center

Peak era for GSET. Jerry spontaneously combusts into a string-shredding inferno.

He's Gone

Extra-special sauce on this one: The outro goes into a long unique jam before the gospel bit. The band is completely unified.

Dark Star

RFK Stadium

One of the melodically most inventive Dark Stars ever. This one has infinity all over it and makes me smile smile smile each time I hear it. Lots of Phil weirdness and electronica, too - sounds like what he'd be doing in '74 with Seastones.
Here Comes Sunshine

Slower than versions earlier in the tour. Not so much a hymn of bursting springtime joy but more a long mellow ride in the hot summer sun.
Eyes Of The World

Full of exploring jams, cool Slipknot teases mid-way through and just the right amount of joyful chaos, with a really cool blues jam for the last 30 seconds that could have gone elswhere, but landed in a Stella. Great version.
Playin' In The Band

High-octane jam. Brilliant interplay between everybody.

But agreed! The vocals are outstanding and the collective improv is just jaw droppingly good. Not to overstate it, but the whole 3rd set is explosively good.
