Samson and Delilah
June 22, 1976
Tower Theatre
These early ones have such brilliant swagger, you can really hear the gospel power to them

The Wheel
June 22, 1976
Tower Theatre
Such floating beauty, you can feel the tires humming down the highway. Part of a magic Playin' sammy too. Everything about this is brilliant.

Tower Theatre
Just exactly perfect here. Bobby and Donna were perfection in '76, The little AUD patch doesn't hurt at all. Jerry and the Devils tear it up.

Looks Like Rain
June 22, 1976
Tower Theatre
Donna and Bobby in perfect sync, beautifully harmonizing, and backed up with brilliant Jerry fretwork. '76 was Donna's best year by far.

The Music Never Stopped
June 21, 1976
Tower Theater
Short set opener, but if there's one where Donna saves it all with breathy ahhhs and mmmms, it's this one. Gentle whispers around 03:30.

Mississippi Halfstep Uptown Toodeloo
July 13, 1976
Orpheum Theatre
Starting with MHUT was such a ballsy move. It struts and grooves right out the gate and told the heads, "We're already warm, so down to business with a 10 minute jam to start the show." I got to see them open with it, and we always knew we were in for a treat then. I bet these Heads did too.
Dancin' in the Streets
July 12, 1976
Orpheum Theater
The link here goes to the sound check, rather than the concert. Both are cool. The sound check is slower and more of a classic funk pocket groove, with some steam-whistling and fuzz guitar goofing off, showing the band in a fun-loving place. Nice archive, thank you archive.
Help On The Way > Slipknot > Franklin's Tower
July 12, 1976
Orpheum Theater
Sweet little China Cat teases about 08:15 into the Franklin's. Just a tease though, they wouldn't play it again for another year and a half, and kept it out of circulation until '79.
Deal
July 12, 1976
Orpheum Theater
This just lights up and sparkles. Jerry's soloing is pristine idea-after-idea exuberance. I can understand why some heads overlook '76, but I won't agree to it: Check this one out for a great stompin' joy and a brilliant look as to how good they could be in this era.
Lazy Lightnin' -> Supplication
July 12, 1976
Orpheum Theater
Killer Supplication here, transition or no. Their superfunk tight, and blisteringly hot. The crowd goes bananas for it. You can hear Phil say something cryptic that sounds like "Steve: Alligator derelicts on Fairfax" before going into Deal, whatever that means.
