Mama Tried
July 17, 1976
Orpheum Theatre
It's got everything nice about the '76 sound: Crisp and clean while laid back. Perfect execution.

Bobby's warmup after a CRS opener helps kick off one of the best 1st sets of 1976. Part of the brief era when they mic'd and mixed Donna beautifully

Gets right weird as part of a deep PITB sammy. How many first set spacemelts are there in '76? Something in the water for this hometown show???

Looks Like Rain

How these guys (and gal) could turn such a cheese-ball song into massive lift-off spaceship jam event horizon is a modern miracle of music.

Smooth running, out of a very cool, thematically coherent Drums. Beautiful harmonies. Every Wheel is an elegant treat from '76, and this is a beaut.

Sugaree
June 21, 1976
Tower Theater
This one swings with great purpose. It builds up and up, and blows up with a nice smooth climax.
Not Fade Away
June 19, 1976
Capitol Theatre
Philzone nirvana here. At a couple of points it almost sounds like he's forcing the band into a Supplication jam that never quite coagulates. Other than that, this confirms my hypothesis that the man has ten fingers on each hand. What a monster musician!
Let It Grow
June 19, 1976
Capitol Theatre
I agree that that the Devils make this one special. It has that amped up and kicking on top of the beat feel of the speedy early 80s versions. The segue is smoother than "proper" sounding like a DJ blending two tracks as much as a typical GD transition.
High Time
June 19, 1976
Capitol Theatre
Jerry and Donna like a choir of angels on this one.
Playin' In The Band
June 19, 1976
Capitol Theatre
Bobby mangles the lyrics from the first moment - almost comically, but that's all good. What follows is a mysterious exploration of space and chaos with that cool understatement of the era.
