Playin' In The Band

Clanging and banging in all the right ways for the '71 sound. Has so much energy packed into it you can hear how it will explode over the next year.

Very serious, beautiful and magical jam. Should be up there with the top of them. Don't miss it.

China Cat Sunflower -> I Know You Rider
Aug. 15, 1971
Berkeley Community Theater

Virtuoso performance, the transition builds like a speeding river as it reaches a waterfall. There's a short tape gap in Rider, though, its all good.

Sugaree
Aug. 15, 1971
Berkeley Community Theater

Smooth and blissful rocker, followed by a very funny 4-second "White Rabbit" quote and conversation in response to a wacky head in the crowd.

Mister Charlie
Aug. 15, 1971
Berkeley Community Theater

Snarling and ballsy, complete with a hog snort in the pause after it. Pigpen got good and greased up for this show. Fun and loose.

Churning and swirling, it grows and grows like a dynamo wheelspinner.
Scarlet Begonias
Sept. 14, 1974
Olympiahalle

The AUD patch at the beginning doesn't remove one iota of this version's enormous musicality and brilliance. Towards the end it sounds like everyone is playing in a different time signature yet moving forward with the grace, fun and bounce specific to the song's unique pulse. Wonderful.
Playin' In The Band

Inventive and flowing with perfect ensemble mindflow. Never gets old. One of the great greats.
Big Railroad Blues
Dec. 10, 1971

If this doesn't getchya out of your chair and get you movin' then check your pulse. A smoker.
I Know You Rider

Alfred College

Fuckin' double posts. I'm sorry. But really young heads dig deep into the good old GD on this one.
