Bird Song
Feb. 24, 1971
Capitol Theater

Super loose in the joints and fun. They seem to be searching for the '71 sound throughout the run here but I like this one.

High powered and super charged. The last third of the first set is a real killer.

Wharf Rat

Capitol Theater

Not the best show, but the best Rat of this run. 4th ever, but the first one to stretch out and become its full self.

Playin' In The Band

Capitol Theater

Want to be present at its birth? The infant Bacchus emerges. I love this song. This is the 1st time they nail it.

The Other One
Feb. 20, 1971
Capitol Theater

Passes through many phases, always exploring new riffs and hinting at further jams without ever losing its essential feeling and sound. Great stuff.

China Cat Sunflower -> I Know You Rider
May 19, 1974
Portland Memorial Coliseum

Ok, that's the real deal. 17 and 19 May '74 are both just amazing shows and amazing CCS>IKYRs. Seems like they had finally ironed out some of the kinks in the Wall of Sound. Yee-haw!
Help On The Way > Slipknot > Franklin's Tower
Sept. 28, 1975
Lindley Meadows, Golden Gate Park

Slipknot is really powerful, extensive and searching. Powerful enough to put a woman or two into labour apparently.
Black Throated Wind
May 19, 1974
Portland Memorial Coliseum

The song seems chronically underrated, perhaps because some of the rhymes are predictable/amateurish. That said, I think the emotional arc of BTW is up there with their best songs (who hasn't felt this powerful after a break-up?). And this one is just killer, deserving its place in the rankings.
China Cat Sunflower -> I Know You Rider

P.N.E. Coliseum

Perfect melodic soloing in the China Jam, great transition. Killer show.
Playin' In The Band

Adams Field House, U of Montana

Little help here? Not sure that's a Supplication tease - someone else recognise it? Addendum from months later: my bad... It's very clearly a 'dancin' in the streets' quote. It came to me while listening to Dark Star from 23.06.74 for some unidentifiable reason.
