Loser
Dec. 10, 1971
Fox Theatre

A triumphant, anthemic version that shows another, powerful side to it. Great piano work gives it a nice flavor.

Goin' Down The Road Feelin' Bad
Dec. 14, 1971
Hill Auditorium

Just transcendentally perfect. The whole set from Cryptical on is monumental '71 headiness.

Playin' In The Band
Dec. 14, 1971
Hill Auditorium

About here Playin' starts stretching out. Only 7 min long, but there's a lot of charge here: Listen to all of them thinking "let's take this furthur".

Black Peter

Hill Auditorium

A little more love for the early ones? A strong and powerful version that never loses focus. Beautiful.

Truckin'

Bristling hot show opener shows how they meant business. Dec. '71 is special transition time and this one pins you to the wall with energy.

Run Run Rudolph
Dec. 15, 1971
Hill Auditorium

A fun rare bit of Chuck Berry's often-overlooked influence on the Dead (and all of Rock and Roll, for that matter).
Hurts Me Too
Dec. 15, 1971
Hill Auditorium

Proof that Pig and Keith went together like potatos and gravy. Pig's voice harp solo are just tops.
Playin' In The Band
Dec. 12, 1973
Omni Coliseum

Like much of '73 this is what I call "hot mellow". Energetic but nicely spacey. Cool version.
Dark Star
Dec. 6, 1973
Public Hall

Oh man, now that's a great Dark Star. Love when Phil just phases in around 12:00 (and again at 19:00) like you're abandoning gravity. That this kind of music was performed live is just too fucking cool for words, but hey, I like Seastones, too.
Here Comes Sunshine
Dec. 6, 1973
Public Hall

Any advice on versions without that glaring AUD patch at the end?
