Winterland Arena

Want to know what it felt like to be Phil's axe, I mean like every single goddamned fiber of it? Strap on headphones and now you'll know.

Hot version with super-fast pickin'. Much fun.

Not Fade Away

Fillmore East

Capping a brilliant show and hiding a nice Mountain Jam. This show doesn't get all the love it deserves.

Ain't It Crazy (The Rub)

Fillmore East

Supercharged and hard rocking. Boys had some strong stuff in them this night.

Of course. Every April'71 is outta sight, and this one pumps diesel.

Caution
Nov. 10, 1967
Shrine Auditorium

All you need, indeed: Blisteringly hot, Phil and Pigpen in overdrive, tripped out raps, exploratory spacemelts....
Viola Lee Blues
Nov. 10, 1967
Shrine Auditorium

Just brilliant. Speeds up, slows down, but always tight. Primal? Pre-primal? This is also the show with the epic Caution which ends up on Anthem.
China Cat Sunflower
Jan. 17, 1968
Carousel Ballroom

The organ part on this version is just beautiful and Pig's just on through the whole gig. I love the early Dead and this show just keeps on giving.
New Potato Caboose
Jan. 20, 1968
Eureka Municipal Auditorium

Some of the best playing from Pig on any Dead recording. He's right in the pocket. This is why I dig the primal dead.
Viola Lee Blues

O'Keefe Center

Just blazing! Massive early dead.
