ATOMIC! Garcia's subversive wah work only makes the area less safe for the public.

Searing version - groovy false start, then Garcia soars like an acrobat. Plug in!

CRUSH. Hard to believe they brought this intensity and dynamic precision all the time then, but they did! Ace!

Unknown Genre - iTunes. Kreutzmann drives this hovercraft - as he seems to in all of the great Berthas of this time. Look out for the guitars.

Have always loved the San Venetia tapes - almost like an x-ray of the GD. You can so hear the guitar architecture. So tempted to make that one word.

The Other One
Dec. 16, 1978
Nashville Municipal Auditorium

Love the audience recording, yeah! Also, Garcia going with Travis Bean No. 1, he gets some jazzbox clarity out of it. Unusual sound for this time. That's why I love this show. A true oddball, and in a great way.
Estimated Prophet

Campus Stadium - University Of California

A bracing hit of Estimated! Almost veering out of the control at times, it fucking gets your attention! Garcia just tears the roof off in his mid-song bust out and can't apply the brakes in time. In pilot lingo, he overshoots the runaway. In normal person lingo: he overshoots the runaway. The global translator: All is forgiven.

Sunnyside up. A bright, snappy, slightly runny romp. Garcia is in complete control - he can steer the ship nearly anywhere he wants. And Weir can be heard clear as a bell. Like Lesh, why did you abandon the perfect sound of this general period? For graphite guitars and effects that removed all attack (which is kind of your calling card)? You try helping people help themselves. I do what I can. Some go, Michael, it's TOO much! I say, I'm a giver.
Playin' In The Band

Memorial Coliseum

You might be tired after the exquisite Terrapin, but this spaced out Playin' makes it worth sticking around.
St. Stephen

Smooth more than mellow to me. And just fucking in charge. And listen to Lesh's bass. L-U-X-U-R-Y.
