Candyman
July 12, 1976
Orpheum Theater

Spare, almost vulnerable take on this classic. Godchaux brings the church and Garcia brings the stained glass. An American beauty.

You can hear the swagger in their mutterings before they play. And the performance bears that out. Sure, smooth, and effortless.

It Must Have Been The Roses

Letter perfect - the Godchauxs take this to a loftier level. Beautiful dynamic push-and-pull by the whole group.

Planting the Flag of Civilization on this tight scorcher. New from factory - Inspector #9. Under penalty of law, this tag may not be YEAH GARCIA!

Dreamy, motionless rendition on a sea of individual human reactions [audience tape]. A wonderful time for this gem.

Brown Eyed Women
May 25, 1977
The Mosque

Confection perfection. A banner time for Brown-Eyed Women. I can't even pick a favorite, but, as stated above, the guitar break in this one is a beaut from Butte! Add to that the sonic beauty of the available boards and Dave's One, and you have an overall bounty.
Scarlet Begonias -> Fire On The Mountain
May 25, 1977
The Mosque

Just another insanely good May 1977 Scarlet>Fire. Each one is different and all of them deliver. This is a superb show all around.
Dark Star
Sept. 2, 1968
Betty Nelson's Organic Raspberry Farm

Preview of what's to come, but it retains its 1968 tribal excitement. A joy.
The Other One
May 1, 1977
The Palladium

As soon as Garcia melts into this, it's a perfect display of the warm, precise, woolly beast the GD was in May 1977. While it's on the short side, they pack a lot of life into 7:27. Ruthless imaginative efficiency!
Playin' In The Band
May 1, 1977
The Palladium

Substantive. Pretty fucking delightful descent into drums - and beautifully into Other One. This one has some serious character.
