Tennessee Jed
Nov. 23, 1973
County Coliseum
If possible, a very contemplative TJ. Everyone's in apex '73 form, esp. Godchaux who's mixed fairly high to good effect.

St. Stephen

Capitol Theater
Of the heavenly 1970 Capitol Theater St. Stephens. Just a beautiful union between audience and group. Killer Stephen! CRUNCH!

Here Comes Sunshine
Sept. 26, 1973
War Memorial
Show opener - the perseverence is what really sells me on this one. A struggle, but a worthy one b/c the spoils are lush. Sneaky great.

China Cat Sunflower -> I Know You Rider
May 18, 1972
Kongressaal, Deutsches Museum
Crazy overlooked: A noble, splendiferous C>R in full Europe 72-ness. Patient, exploratory, charming. Driving a distance? Pack this.

Bird Song
Feb. 21, 1971
Capitol Theater
An intimate very early Bird Song - Quartet-styled, which serves this song really well. Also: you can hear the thinking, especially between guitars.

Garcia is regal here.
Wharf Rat
May 11, 1977
St. Paul Civic Center Arena
What a fucking entry! No surprise such an elegant Wharf Rat follows a deep burgundy Uncle John's Band.
Uncle John's Band
May 11, 1977
St. Paul Civic Center Arena
One of my favorite periods for this great song. A hard song to pull off with smooth joie de vivre live, but May 1977? No problem. It's largely in Garcia's majestic narrative voice. And I love a good Garcia soliloquy - again, especially Spring of 77. The lonesome sound of the Travis Bean in a big ol' hall. Nominally called Space, it floats through the murky Civic Center atmosphere. Just something else unique the GD bring to the city tourism returns.
He's Gone
Sept. 9, 1972
Hollywood Palladium
A solid 72 He's Gone is special to me. One of Garcia-Hunter's real masterpieces.
