Ship of Fools
Oct. 18, 1978
Winterland Arena

An especially sharp and spirited specimen - expressive vocals, the rhythm section is precise, and Garcia's guitar break is masterful. A still life.

Energetic, serene AND Garcia's break is pure ragtime gold. In a good TJ, the guitar is a character. Here: a little insolent. Quality.

The Wheel

That spacious, unadorned June 1976 sound is so perfect for The Wheel. This one's dynamic and delivered with feeling. Cool show.

Cumberland Blues

Oh man: LISTEN! Vocals are mixed a bit high, but this Cumberland has all the important "little" details. Notes the quotes. B'AM!!!!

1976: Your standard issue tipsy, warm-hearted TJ of the period. The guitar break is more conversation than guitar solo. Standard but special.

Brown Eyed Women
Aug. 21, 1972
Berkeley Community Theater

Just re-entered this orbit. I don't know of (m)any better Brown-Eyed Women. Just beautiful, dignified, and elegant. Classic song delivered on a cloud. Glad to revisit my friend.
Scarlet Begonias -> Fire On The Mountain

How are a 1989 and 1990 above this? That seems insane to me. I was at the JFK show - it was really good, but still ... On one hand, I sympathize with the urge to vote for eras in which you saw shows (me: 1985-91). On the other, I don't get how a 1990 S>F is #3. Actually, I don't really get how 2/5/78 is #2.

I am torn. At first I was all like No (for reasons expressed above), then I listened again and heard some truly outer space shit in the Scarlet. It is unique. While not at 5/77 level (to my ears, of course), this one has won me over!
Eyes Of The World
Aug. 10, 1982
Iowa Fieldhouse - University of Iowa

Agree with everything said by grendel and Q_76. This whole show is special, so no shock that the Eyes is superb. My fave Eyes are generally 73, 74, 77 (although nothing wrong w/76). This one isn't necessarily at the level of 6/18/74 or 2/26/77, but it totally holds its own. Garcia's on jazzbo fire.
The Other One

Carousel Ballroom

A ferocious little spirit. Garcia really coming into his own and he slays.
