Bird Song
Feb. 21, 1971
Capitol Theater

An intimate very early Bird Song - Quartet-styled, which serves this song really well. Also: you can hear the thinking, especially between guitars.

Tennessee Jed

Paramount Northwest Theater

Ho-Hum: Another outstanding 1972 TJ. This gem from the sorta overlooked summer tour. Garcia aces the break, natch. Band - unconscious. Whew! at end.

Candyman
June 21, 1976
Tower Theater

From Garcia's cheeky intro on, this graceful cabochon throws a faint, warm light. 1976 elegance w/a sick, raw spider web guitar break.

Wharf Rat
March 21, 1985
Hampton Coliseum

First show - I didn't know this gem very well & after this criss-crossy version, I was hooked. Dark & murky.

Loser
July 21, 1972
Paramount Northwest Theater

Download Series - An intimate, casual living room Loser. Garcia coming out of the guitar break is divine. Not the actor.

China Cat Sunflower -> I Know You Rider
May 25, 1974
Campus Stadium, UCSB

Certainly right up there - both of those shows. I love the Weather Report from 5/19. Just a lovely show from top to bottom.

Q_76 is spot on - 5/19/74 is blistering.
Terrapin Station
Feb. 26, 1977
Swing Auditorium

There are Terrapins I prefer, but I'll take this one every single time over any from 1990 (and I was at Landover). Barely audible 6-string Lesh, murky Weir, post-coma Garcia, flabby drums - this is in comparison with 1977. This one also has a nervous energy that distinguishes it - they probably knew they were taking on a new and different challenge.
Dark Star
Feb. 22, 1969
Dream Bowl

What A cool re-visit (been a little while) - as someone said above, each listen brings a slightly different perspective.
The Other One
Dec. 29, 1968
Gulfstream Park Race Track

BLAST OFF!!!!! Blistering front page news Other One. Garcia definitely sounds to be working something out - visceral and violent. He goes right for the jugular and just fucking stays there. GET OFF MY NECK!!! WOOOOO!!!! Great music.
