Me and My Uncle
Nov. 17, 1971
Albuquerque Civic Auditorium

Two things: (1) the middle of a searing Other One > MAMU > Other One fest and (2) Garcia loses his mind (or mine) at the end of the solo.

Drop dead gorgeous, lithe, and restaurant quality perfect.

Lately I think of Port Chester. Fab 4 Alignment. Limber. Ambidextrous.

St. Stephen

Boston Tea Party

The peak is like a merry-go-round spinning out of and back into control and then, albeit briefly, out and in of control again.

The Music Never Stopped
April 23, 1977
Springfield Civic Center

Super fluid Garcia rides the waterslide. They have this tricky little number so in their hip pocket. A flask version.
Truckin'
March 21, 1972
Academy of Music

This one's gonna be good from the excellent Weir intro banner. You can tell. The band is loose, confident, almost bullet-proof. Clearly, a lovely time is being had - including a Weir crack-up. From Kreutzmann on out, high test. Garcia just comes smoldering out of the gates - Stratocaster thrusters a GO!
Playin' In The Band
Sept. 24, 1976
William and Mary College Hall

Listening to the DP4 version, which is pretty plush. Not quite the triumphant march of 12/31, but sparkling and plenty assured. The exit out of Supplication sounds like very little else in the collection. Cool show.
Brown Eyed Women
Nov. 17, 1972
Century II Convention Hall

Carrion: interesting question. Will have to listen another 16 times at least before I can even begin to think about it. It is a nimble ride, however. One of the great Garcia-Hunter confections and Weir is fucking Willie Wonka. Note: I mean not literally sleeping with him.

A torrid C>R from a favorite show. 1972 might be the year of the perfect C>Rs and this version, like most of them, demonstrates how easy and natural playing the fuck out of this showpiece became for them. And like so many 1972 shows, Kreutzmann is exceptional.
