Warp speed, precise, slightly unhinged, and driving into the greenish-blue evening.

Godchaux leads a version that seethes with the excitement of a new song.

A giggly, slangy Garcia masterpiece (in sweet show sauce). Goes down EZ.

So good you can practically see the border town.

The Eleven
Feb. 4, 1969
The Music Box

Love this show! Check out the Other One - searing hot. No surprise, great Eleven. Lesh and Garcia burn up the phone lines. Effortlessly toggling between attack and relax. Also check out the Other One at the same venue April, 69. Jeeeesh.
The Other One

Civic Center

Eerie transition out of Space sets a dark tone that is perfectly exploited by Lesh and the boys. Compact, expressive edition.
Scarlet Begonias -> Fire On The Mountain

Lakeland Civic Center

Someone mentioned it, but the Scarlet guitar break is kick-ass. Jeeeez. It takes a good Scarlet and jolts the whole group into another place. Joyous. + Superb journey into Fire (Garcia's out of his mind). + And the Fire is pure silk. The entire suite is taken at a slow pace that is restraint not drag.

This is a highlight version. One of those definitive May 77's. Pretty magical even before the first guitar break. After the second guitar break, another level altogether.
Estimated Prophet
May 12, 1977
Auditorium Theatre

Solid, sturdy audience. Probably contributes to this being a little underestimated. No pun. Aside from the two dudes talking intermittently (apparently there's some important thing), this is a great atmosphere tape. + As for the Estimated itself, this one is smoooooth and plucky! Chik Fil A quality. Love that envelope filter in a swanky theatre sound! + The coda, of course - Garcia just melts into it. Ruins the envelope filter pedal for all other guitar players. The Master.
